The Bear‘s fifth and final season was an emotional watch for so many reasons, one of the biggest being that the series had to move forward without its spectacular Season 4 star, Rob Reiner.

The late actor and his wife of 36 years Michele Reiner were found dead in their home in December 2025, and because The Bear didn’t begin Season 5 production until early 2026, Reiner and his character Albert Schnur didn’t physically appear in the final eight episodes.

Despite Reiner’s heartbreaking absence, The Bear still wrote Albert into the story and found a particularly touching way to pay tribute to the actor, director, producer, and filmmaker while honoring one of his most beloved projects.

So how did The Bear Season 5 acknowledge Reiner’s death? And how was Albert incorporated into the final episodes? Read on for answers, but be warned that light spoilers for The Bear Season 5 lie ahead.

How Did The Bear Season 5 Honor Rob Reiner? Why Wasn’t Albert In The Bear?

For those who need a refresher, after culinary school knocked Ebra’s confidence in Season 3, the Tribune’s praise for the beef window motivated him to “create opportunity” in Season 4, so he enlisted the assistance of Albert, who’d consulted for everything from Fortune 500 companies to strip-mall laundromats. Ebra spent the season shadowing him and absorbing his wisdom, and Albert came up with a brilliant plan to help save The Bear: expansion through replication, aka, a mini franchise.

If the team went slow, kept the family feel, and ensured quality control, Albert thought they could “be bigger than Arby’s!” And in Season 4’s penultimate episode, the sandwich window squad agreed to pitch three new spaces to Carmy and cut Albert in on the action as “a consigliere like Robert Duvall in The Godfather.” Albert even hit it off with “The Computer” (Brian Koppelman), teasing what would be a beautiful, thoroughly entertaining partnership down the line.

Clearly, Albert was meant to play a significant role in Season 5, which picked up shortly after the Season 4 finale’s end. But in wake of Reiner’s death, the character only appeared in the final eight episodes through phone calls with Ebra. In one call, Ebra said, “Albert, I’m going to speak to Carmy this afternoon. Please advise… ‘Repeat after me. Make it easy for him to say yes. Don’t use too many words. Have no fear. Don’t be scared by his blue eyes. Stop repeating. Stop repeating.’ Oh, yes. Sorry. Yes, of course. Wish me luck.”

Albert is referenced throughout the season, as Computer urges Uncle Jimmy (Oliver Platt) to partner with him and explore franchising. And once he and Carmy agree, the finale finds Ebra and colleagues scouting out franchise locations. While exploring one space, Ebra took another call with Albert and told him the location looked “perfect” before asking if there was anything else he could do. We didn’t hear the request, but it didn’t matter. What mattered is that Ebra replied, “As you wish,” a famous line from Reiner’s beloved 1987 film The Princess Bride. BRB, SOBBING!

The Bear was one of Reiner’s final credits, and as noted in our Season 4 article, he was perfectly cast. He had serious star power like Jamie Lee Curtis and Bob Odenkirk before him, but Reiner swiftly embraced and embodied his character so specifically that his off-screen identity never distracted from the on-screen narrative.

Reiner’s charm, upbeat energy, and comforting personality read as incredibly earnest and helped viewers (and Ebra) trust him immediately, and it was incredibly encouraging to see someone support and invest in Ebra’s skills. Reiner was one of The Bear‘s best guest stars and a man who beautifully embodied the heart and immense passion of the series.

In an interview with USA Today, White called Reiner “incredibly generous [and] incredibly kind,” saying, “[He was] so game and curious, committed. Really happy to be there… Sometimes you meet those heroes, and it’s disappointing and you wish you hadn’t. And that’s just the opposite case with Rob. He delivered.”

Gibson, Reiner’s main scene partner, told The Standard, “All those days that Rob and I spent together were a lot of fun. I’m really happy that it looks like, ‘Oh, they must have spent so much time,’ when in actuality we just had such a great chemistry immediately.”

“I got to be his last scene partner, unfortunately… but it was just really, really great moments with someone that you grew up watching in front of the camera, then behind the camera,” Gibson continued. “It’s emotional when I think about it, because we go back in Season 5, and he’s not there and we fully expected him to be there, [it] changed a bit the trajectory of the story.”

Reiner is terribly missed, but his legacy will live on through the projects he created and he enhanced, the people he influenced, and now, through The Bear and its thoughtful final season tribute.
