‘From’ Season 4 Ending Explained: Does Fatima Turn Into a Monster?

When new arrivals drive into town in MGM+’s supernatural horror series From, they are left to drive around and around in circles until they realize that they can never escape. But when it comes to the show’s highly anticipated fourth season, we have finally reached the end of the road. If you’re still reeling after the finale of From Season 4, we at DECIDER are here to help.

**Spoilers for From Season 4 Episode 10 “If a Tree Falls in the Forest…,” now streaming on MGM+**

The unnamed town in From has it all: terrifying lore dating back centuries, bloodthirsty creatures that come out at night, and somehow, a fully functional diner with some mean pancakes on the menu. Worst of all, those who enter the town can never leave…or can they? This is the question that self-appointed sheriff Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) attempts to answer as danger grows and the townspeople become more desperate — but can he get everyone home before his own mind begins to fray?

Episode 9 left off with Boyd, Jade (David Alpay), and Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno) finally executing the plan to dig up the dead children’s bones. As Boyd and the rest of his group prepared to rip out the Bottle Tree from its roots, Tabitha and Jade entered the tunnels. But just as they found the bones at the tail end of the episode, the creatures awoke and popped up behind their makeshift plastic wall like they were playing the most demented game of peek-a-boo. Will the two be able to escape? What’s really going to happen once Boyd takes down the tree? And what is the Man in Yellow (Douglas E. Hughes) going to do now that he knows the townspeople are performing the ritual correctly? Here’s everything we learned from the Season 4 finale of From, titled “If a Tree Falls in the Forest…”

From Season 4 Ending Explained: What Happens When the Bottle Tree Falls?

As the monsters begin to surround Jade and Tabitha, Boyd and his group aboveground tie a chain around the Bottle Tree and pull it out by the roots using a truck, creating an opening above the chamber to pull Tabitha and Jade out. However, the Boy in White warned Victor (Scott McCord) in Episode 9 that the tree was important and that taking it down would have serious consequences. After the rope ladder Boyd throws to Jade and Tabitha breaks (all thanks to Sophia’s meddling), these consequences come in the form of the sky going completely dark in the middle of the day, making it easy for the creatures to come after our favorite reincarnated duo. As Tabitha and Jade find a hiding spot in the tunnels next to a barred-off exit, the ground beneath them starts to shake and an earthquake ripples throughout the town.

Later on in the episode, red bolts of lightning shoot out of the hole where the Bottle Tree used to be, and soon the sky is covered in them. When Donna sits Julie and Ethan down for a talk at Colony House, cupboards in the kitchen slam open and shut at a rapid pace, and glass shatters as kitchenware goes flying. We’ve seen this happen before in the Matthews household (remember when they had a house?), and the phantom silverware is even more unsettling when combined with unnatural disasters like red lightning and mid-day night.

It seems like the Boy in White was right — ripping out the Bottle Tree was a big mistake. If all this damage could be done without the tree in one episode, who knows what hell is waiting for Boyd and the rest of the townspeople in Season 5?

Does Elgin Die in From Season 4?

Elgin was left in a compromising position at the end of Episode 9. He had discovered an old photograph of Sophia who, unbeknownst to him, was a townsperson who died years ago, allowing the Man in Yellow to take her form and sabotage the townspeople’s efforts to escape from within.

In the diner, Sophia (Julia Doyle) reveals herself to Elgin (Nathan D. Simmons) and tries to manipulate him into a bargain just like she did with Clara. She tells him it got dark outside because they are getting near the end. She is trying to spare him from the “mess” that the end will bring by offering him a chance to go home, and all he has to do is agree to help her. He steps into the kitchen to think and pray for salvation, but it’s too late. Sophia finds him and takes his hands, making him choke on his own blood with her powers as he sinks to the floor and dies.

Poor Elgin. He really should’ve kept one eye open. (Too soon?)

Does Marielle Die in the From Season 4 Finale?

Because Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori) gave birth to one of the creatures, she is able to see through its eyes. This ability comes into play when the sky darkens and she tells Marielle (Kaelen Ohm) that her monster/child Smiley is drawing near right as she notices that the clinic’s talisman fell. Marielle tries to hang it back up, but it’s no use — the creature backs her and Fatima into a corner and rips her stomach open. The only reason he stops after that is Fatima screeching at him in a way that sounds just like the creatures.

The monster leaves, and by the time Kristi returns from the forest, it’s already too late. Marielle is bleeding out, and all Kristi can do is give her fiancé one last kiss goodbye.

Does Henry Kill Victor in From Season 4 Episode 10?

Thanks to the blood Sophia slipped into Henry’s drink a few episodes back, Henry has been seeing visions of the “real world.” In his visions, Henry lays institutionalized after the fateful mushroom trip he and his wife took years ago. His daughter is alive, and Victor is a well-adjusted man in a suit-and-tie who has a son of his own. In his visions, his doctor and not-Victor tell him that the town is just a product of his delusional mind, and that in order to escape the dream, he must “eliminate the anchor” keeping him there — a.k.a, the real Victor.

Henry has been trying to keep a grip on reality, but the whole day-turning-to-night thing kind of broke his trust that anything about this town is real. Not-Victor told him that the dream would provide him with everything he needs to escape, so he goes and steals Victor’s old gun from the sheriff’s station.

Don’t worry; Henry doesn’t actually go through with killing his son. He almost does when Victor goes to check up on him back at Colony House, but Ethan walks in just as Henry is about to pull the trigger. Henry points the gun at Ethan, and in a flash, Victor knocks the gun out of his hand and pins him down.

After years of being separated, Victor and his father finally reunite only to be driven apart once again by the town and its sinister forces. There’s no telling what their relationship is going to look like after this, or whether Henry will continue to be deluded about the vision of “reality” he sees in his mind.

From Season 4 Ending Explained: Does Fatima Turn Into a Monster?

Okay, let’s get back to the main plot. Tabitha and Jade are still hiding underground, trying to knock the bars loose off of a possible exit they found. They also get their morse code radio working for a bit, alerting Boyd that they are, in fact, still alive. Meanwhile, after returning to town, Boyd plans to go back underground alone to find them. Ellis and Fatima beg to go with him. Boyd is not sold on the idea — until Fatima tells him about her newfound abilities that she used before Marielle was murdered. Not only is she able to see through Smiley’s eyes, but she can also sense when it and other creatures are near.

This convinces Boyd to let the two of them tag along. Fatima’s powers come in clutch underground: she tells Boyd and Ellis when to stop so the creatures don’t hear them, and when it’s safe to move. Eventually, they find Jade and Tabitha on the other side of the barred-off entrance, and Boyd shoots the bars loose. Just as Tabitha and Jade crawl their way through with their bags of bones, Fatima warns the group: “They’re here.”

The creatures approach and soon have the gang surrounded, and Fatima tells them to run while she buys them time. Suddenly, Fatima’s face contorts into the face of one of the creatures while she emits a horrifying screech.

So, is Fatima now a creature of the night? She has certainly felt a connection to the creatures ever since she gave birth to one last season. She has grown black marks on her stomach and, as Kristi discovered, has the vitals of someone who should be dead. However, we don’t know from the finale whether she is a full-blown creature, or whether she will remain that way forever. She could be some sort of cross-breed with the ability to go in and out of her monster form at will. Either way, we’ll have to wait for From Season 5 for definitive answers.

What is the Man in Yellow Up To in From on MGM+?

Those who expected the Man in Yellow to be a bigger presence in this episode may be a bit disappointed. After he murders Elgin as Sophia, he does most of his work this episode in the shadows. However, a big, finale-worthy confrontation is not necessary for the Man in Yellow to put the entire town into grave danger.

Throughout the episode, we see Sophia skulk around town stealing talismans from various locations: the church, the gas station, and even the sheriff’s office. Near the end of the episode, we see Clara give Sophia a bag of talismans she collected herself.

With minutes left in the Season 4 finale, Sophia takes a nature walk in the forest carrying a bag of every last talisman the townspeople had. The Boy in White approaches her and tells her that Tabitha and Jade have the bones, and that she won’t win this time. Sophia tells him that she admires his optimism, then says with a chilling smile, “I guess we’ll see.” She then takes the bag of talismans and dumps them into a Faraway Tree which, as we all know, holds a portal that could lead anywhere.

It’s true that Tabitha and Jade were able to escape and get the children’s bones above ground, but they still don’t know what they’re supposed to do with them. And now that the Man in Yellow tossed all of the talismans into an abyss, the town has the potential to become a mass grave in one single night.

So, what comes next? The fifth and final season of From has already been greenlit according to The Hollywood Reporter, so fans won’t be left hanging on that front. As for the Man in Yellow’s plan, the children’s bones, and the fate of the entire town? In the words of our favorite sunshine-colored psychopath, “I guess we’ll see.”
