What the rest of this season must mean for the Mets

The Mets’ new era under interim manager Andy Green has not exactly gotten off to a bang.

Following a 9-3 loss to the Blue Jays on Wednesday and going a holiday-weekend four-game series in Atlanta, the Mets (36-51) have won just two of his first six games in charge — taking them ever further away from an already far-fetched wild-card spot.

While Green spoke about instilling “joy” and being “willing to challenge” his players at a passionate introductory press conference last week, he can only do so much with what looks to be a middling roster. He’s also expected to return to his role as senior vice president of baseball development following the season, as David Stearns said.

Realistically, then, firing Carlos Mendoza was not about returning the team to contention this year. Not with the team this far off.
