‘Dutton Ranch’ Season 2: 10 Burning Questions After Season 1’s Jaw-Dropping Finale

‘Dutton Ranch’ Season 2: 10 Burning Questions After Season 1’s Jaw-Dropping Finale

When the end credits roll on Dutton Ranch‘s eventful Season 1 finale, fans will be left processing a main character death, wondering how Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) will best their new nemesis Mariano Reyes (Raoul Max Trujillo), and fearing for the fate of our dearly beloved Carter (Finn Little) after that major cliffhanger.

There’s no doubt that the hit Yellowstone spin-off wrapped its debut season on a high, but it also wrapped with a number of unanswered questions that will keep viewers guessing until its return.

As we embark on the agonizing wait for Dutton Ranch Season 2, we’ve compiled a list of burning questions that will live rent free in our brains for the next however many months. These are by no means all the questions viewers will have after Season 1’s finale, so feel free to share yours in the comments below! But without further ado, let’s giddy up!

  1. How Hellish Will The Fallout From Rob-Will’s Death Be?

Rob-Will and Joaquin on 'Dutton Ranch'
    Photo: Paramount+

Dutton Ranch‘s Season 1 finale showed Rob-Will’s demise, and though we didn’t see his brother Joaquin pull the trigger, we caught a glimpse of what looked like his car peeling away from the scene and later saw him pull over and cry, with his gun beside him. That, plus the fact that he was sitting outside the house loading a gun before the shooting, had serious motive, and was literally ordered by his father to pull the trigger essentially confirms that he did indeed kill his own brother. So what happens next?!

Will the guilt eat Joaquin alive or harden him to follow in his father’s footsteps? How will he face Oreana and Beulah? And what happens if — or more likely, when — they find out?!

  2. Will Sheriff Wade Do His Dang Job?

    Wade on 'Dutton Ranch'
    Photo: Paramount+

Speaking of Joaquin’s future, we have a lot of questions about Sheriff Handy Wade, who knows so much about this town and the people in it, yet has said and done so little. (Not very handy if you ask me!) Hours before Rob-Will’s death, Joaquin went to the station with the gun his brother used to kill Wes and tried to get him arrested. So if Beulah calls on Wade to solve her son’s murder, will he keep Joaquin’s motive to himself? And then there’s Carter…

When Beth first went to the station to enlist Wade’s help in finding her son, she couldn’t present proof that Carter’s life was in danger, so Wade refused to assist. But now that Carter’s life is indisputably at risk because he’s been kidnapped by the cartel will she seek Wade’s help again? And will step up? And please fill her in on Dwight?!

  3. What Happens To Business?

    Zane Nash on 'Dutton Ranch'

Not to be that person, but what about Business?! The 10-Petal’s successor is down, so presumably Joaquin will step up to fill his shoes — provided Beulah doesn’t know he took her son’s life. But there’s no way that Beth and Rip — or even Beulah for that matter now that Mariano’s in town — will be paying any mind to Business, ranching, or earning money with Carter kidnapped! On top of the fact that the core characters need to make a living somehow, I’m sure Zane Nash will have some questions in Season 2!

  4. Is Everett’s Wife Still Alive?

Dutton Ranch, Annette Bening and Ed Harris
    Paramount+

As Beulah and Everett started rekindling their old flame in Season 1 we learned that Everett was married to someone who wasn’t Beulah, though her identity and status is currently Unknown. When B asked why Everett wore his wedding ring, he replied, “I’m still married — not that I want to be with her, if you’re asking.” So who’s Everett’s wife? Is she still alive? And if so, why aren’t aren’t they together anymore? Does it have anything to do with his late son’s death? And why did Beulah and Everett split in the first place? We need much more Dutton Ranch lore in Season 2!

  5. Have We Seen The Last Of Wes’ Wife?

    Whitney on 'Dutton Ranch'
    Photo: Paramount+

Speaking of wives, have we seen the last of Wes’ wife, Whitney Ayers, who fled earlier this season before the Jacksons could silence her? What happened to her after she left? Did she go to the cops or decide to lay low? And has she put her husband’s disappearance and burning desire to make the Jacksons pay behind her? Or will she return with a vengeance? There’s a chance that her role on the show is over, but then again, Dutton Ranch has delivered its fair share of surprises thus far, so we’ll have to wait and see!

  6. Is The Texas Train Station As Secure As Montana’s Was?

    Dutton Ranch, Rip Wheeler
    Paramount+

The body count in Rip’s makeshift Texas train station is rising, as are the number of people who know about the dumping ground. But is the site really as secure as Rip hopes? Or could those bodies be found in the future?

  7. What Happened To Oreana’s Mom?

Rob-Will and Oreana on 'Dutton Ranch'
    Photo: Paramount+

As we saw when we met Mariano and Rob-Will’s dad via flashback, Dutton Ranch has a knack for keeping characters’ whereabouts and backstories secret until a reveal fits into the story. So in wake of Rob-Will’s death, could we be meeting — or at least learning more about — Oreana’s mom? Why isn’t she in her life? What’s her history with Beulah? Is she alive? And if so and Dutton Ranch hasn’t cast her yet, can they please consider Natalie Alyn Lynd’s iconic real-life mom Barbara Alyn Woods? Thank you!

  8. Would Dutton Ranch Actually Kill Carter?

    Dutton Ranch, Carter
    Paramount+

Dutton Ranch entered its darkest timeline yet when Carter was kidnapped by the cartel. But there’s no way this actually ends with him dead, right?! The Sheridan-verse has certainly featured its fair share of ruthless, downright shocking deaths, but we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: There’s no indication that Finn Little is leaving this series, and we can’t imagine it without him! That said, we also can’t see how Beth and Rip take down Mariano and the freaking Cartel. Sure, they have one of his godsons hostage, and potential help from Beulah and Sheriff Wade. But we have a better idea…

  9. Will We Get The Dutton Ranch And Marshals Crossover Episode Of Our Dreams?

    Photo: Paramount Network

Dutton Ranch and Marshals had two very different debut seasons, but they essentially ended the same. Both Carter and Tate were taken by bad guys! And Tate was allegedly being taken to Texas! When Marshals aired its Season 1 finale in May, fans felt that the Texas twist would be a perfect opening for a Marshals/Dutton Ranch crossover episode. Surely Beth and Rip would know the lay of the land in Texas and could help Kayce rescue Tate, with or without the rest of his team, right? But now that Beth and Rip also have a kid in danger and seemingly need some serious backup, could Kayce and the Marshals crew lend a hand to get Carter back and take down Mariano’s drug operation??? Please! We need this epic Dutton reunion!

A list of burning Dutton Ranch questions wouldn’t be complete without one of the most pressing: When is Dutton Ranch Season 2 premiering? Since Dutton Ranch Season 1 just wrapped, there’s no official Dutton Ranch Season 2 premiere date on the books yet. And we still have a little PTSD from the almost two-year gap between Yellowstone Season 5, Part 1 and Part 2. We know Sheridan-verse show turnaround times vary depending on a number of factors, but the fact that Dutton Ranch already found a new showrunner in Benjamin Cavell is a promising sign. If the writers get back to work and production commences in a timely fashion, we could hopefully get new episodes of Dutton Ranch in 2027. We’ll learn more about Dutton Ranch‘s Season 2 timeline in the coming months, so stay tuned for more updates!
