It wasn’t immediately clear what Neymar was saying to Nyland, but the keeper lightly shoved him away, and as Neymar backed away, he continued to taunt the Norwegian. 

Neymar spent most of the match on the sideline on Sunday as Norway upset the Brazilians, 2-1, in the Round of 16, with star Erling Haaland scoring a pair of goals late in the match.

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti opted to leave Neymar on the bench for tactical reasons, even though Neymar had been fully healthy after dealing with injury issues at the start of the World Cup. 

Neymar checked into the match in the 68th minute and played the rest of the way. 

The soccer star had already had a particularly chippy moment against Norway several minutes earlier after an aggressive play led to a scrum breaking out and Neymar receiving a yellow card as a result of it. 

Following the loss, Neymar had to be consoled by his teammates on the pitch. 

Neymar dropped to his knees and appeared to shed tears after the final whistle, prompting several teammates to come over and try to comfort him. 

There had been plenty of pressure on Brazil coming into the tournament with its fans looking for the national team to win its first World Cup since 2002. 

Attention will now turn toward the future for Brazil, as Ancelotti alluded to during his press conference after the match. 

“It’s evident that we have a problem in midfield and that we need new, young players of a high level to emerge; we have young players in Brazilian football who could be on the national team in the future,” he said.
