Eccentric heiress who blew $80M on crypto is mystery buyer of record $36M luxe LA penthouse

Last week’s $36 million sale of the Sierra Towers penthouse — one of LA’s priciest residential towers which has been home to dozens of Hollywood A-listers over the past five decades — marks one of the biggest condo deals in the city’s history.

Page Six Hollywood can now reveal that the mystery buyer is none other than Taylor Thomson, the Canadian heiress who recently made headlines after losing over $80 million through cryptocurrency investments managed by her former friend Ashley Richardson.

The 66-year-old Thomson is the only daughter of Canada’s richest family and an heiress to the Thomson Reuters media fortune.

She is also now the owner of a 7,365 square foot, 3-bedroom, 6-bathroom condominium that sits atop one of the crown jewels and offers some of the most stunning views of the city.

According to the listing, the residence offers “white-oak floors, soaring ceilings and walls of floor-to-ceiling glass that flood the interiors in natural light.” Other finishes include, “Simena limestone and Cristallo quartzite surfaces, custom white oak millwork and hammered bronze.”

It’s almost impossible to overstate the glamour that has graced the halls of the Doheny Road property, which was originally designed by midcentury architect Jack Charney, who studied under Richard Neutra. The roster of current and former residents of Sierra Towers, which sits at the border between Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, reportedly includes Elton John, Lindsey Lohan, Cher, the late Ozzy Osbourne, Adam Sandler, Sandra Bullock, Joan Collins, David Geffen, Sidney Poitier and Courteney Cox among others.

The building’s amenities include a 24/7 concierge, a fitness center, a pool, spa and sauna, valet and security and a ballroom.

As for Thomson, she is known as somewhat of an eccentric who once pursued an acting career. In a 2025 investigative story, the Wall Street Journal detailed the bizarre contours of her relationship with Richardson. According to the story, after meeting at a house party in Malibu the two women became close friends, traveled the world together and bonded over their shared love of cooking and their attachment to various psychics.

It’s a wild yarn that includes a cameo from Hollywood private investigator Anthony Pellicano and everything goes south when the friends both start making massive bets on a now defunct crypto currency known as Persistence. According to the WSJ, Richardson is now driving an Uber. Thomson, meanwhile, just bought the second most expensive condo in LA history, we hear.

A rep for Thomson didn’t comment. Real estate blog North Hillcrest was first to report the sale.
