Firefighter father struck by lightning in Alabama exactly one year after firework exploded in his face: ‘Lucky to be here’

A firefighter in Alabama is counting his lucky stars after he survived being struck by lightning on Sunday — exactly one year after he walked away with minor injuries when a firework exploded in his face.

James Lawley was celebrating his daughter’s birthday on Sunday when conditions deteriorated as storms began to roll over Cullman County, WVTM 13 reported.

The devoted father and firefighter said he was standing near a car and firetruck when he was struck by lightning.

“The only thing I remember is kind of grabbing my chest and saying that ‘I’m hit, I’m hit,’’” Lawley told the outlet.

“I just didn’t know what was going on. I knew that something had happened because people were screaming and crying but I didn’t know what was happening at the time,” he recalled.

After the chaos unfolded, emergency medics told the father they believe he was hit by a secondary lightning strike rather than directly — something that likely saved his life.

While Lawley is lucky to have survived being struck by lightning, the firefighting hero survived another near-death experience on the exact same day last year.

On July 5 last year, Lawley celebrated the patriotic holiday weekend by setting off fireworks on a beach when one firecracker fell over and exploded in his face.

Lawley ended up with several stitches in his nose and face from the explosion.

He feels he may be running out of lives, however, as he has also undergone five rounds of chemotherapy since 2021.

“It was like, we avoided fireworks that whole day because of that and at the end of the day I get struck by lightning,” Lawley said.

“So I don’t know if it’s the 5th of July or what, but I’m unlucky on that day,” he quipped.

While the firefighting father says he is “lucky to be here” he joked he may need to be wrapped in bubble wrap next Fourth of July weekend to avoid being hurt for a third year in a row.

“You never know when it’s your last day, you never know when something freak could happen,” the lucky father said.

“So make sure you treat everyday like it’s your last day.”
