R.I.P. Wai Ching Ho: ‘Daredevil,’ ‘Iron Fist,’ and ‘Turning Red’ Star Dies at 82

Wai Ching Ho, the veteran actor best known for playing the formidable Madame Gao in Marvel‘s Daredevil, Iron Fist, and The Defenders, has died at 82.

Beyond her work in the Marvel universe, Ho also voiced Grandma Wu in Pixar‘s Turning Red, the acclaimed 2022 animated film that earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.

The news was announced by Daredevil co-star Peter Shinkoda, who portrayed Nobu Yoshioka in the show’s first season. Sharing the news on Instagram, he wrote, “Just lost someone very special to me. She was one of the coolest. Thinking aloud.”

Shinkoda later posted another tribute to his late co-star, writing, “I won’t ever forget you. I learned every minute from you when we were together on and off set. We will meet again, my friend. You were beautiful.”

Actor Mahira Kakkar, who appeared alongside Ho in the National Asian American Theatre Company’s production of Henry VI, also honored her on Instagram. Kakkar remembered Ho’s performance as King Lear as “riveting,” while calling her “a pillar,” “a stellar human,” and “a stellar artist.”

A cause of death has not been made public.

Born in Hong Kong on November 16, 1943, Ho amassed an impressive list of film, television, and stage credits over the course of her career. Before stepping into the Marvel universe, she appeared in Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Flight of the Conchords, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. She later went on to star in Orange Is the New Black, Fresh Off the Boat, The Good Cop, New Amsterdam, Hustlers, Law & Order: Organized Crime, and Only Murders in the Building.

Onstage, Ho also earned acclaim for performances in productions including Henry VI, Endlings, Snow in Midsummer, and Pearl’s Beauty Salon.

For many Marvel fans, though, Ho’s defining role was Madame Gao. Introduced in the first season of Daredevil, the enigmatic crime boss operated alongside Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), Nobu (Peter Shinkoda), Vladimir (Nikolai Nikolaeff), and Anatoly Ranskahov (Gideon Emery) as one of Hell’s Kitchen’s most dangerous power players. While many of her allies ultimately fell, Madame Gao managed to evade capture.

That allowed the character to return in both Iron Fist and The Defenders, where she was revealed to be one of the leaders of the Hand, the ancient organization pulling the strings behind much of the chaos across Marvel’s Netflix shows.

Because Madame Gao’s body was never explicitly shown after the events of The Defenders, fans have long speculated that she survived. Those theories picked up steam again following reports that Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 would feature the return of Elektra Natchios (Élodie Yung), with Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Danny Rand (Finn Jones) also joining the expanding cast of returning Netflix-era characters.

With Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 still filming, a surprise return from Madame Gao now appears far less likely. Even so, Ho’s quietly commanding performance remains one of the standout turns from Marvel’s Netflix era and just one highlight in a career that spanned decades across television, film, and the stage.
