‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ Stars Kylie Cantrall & Liamani Segura Tease The “Mysterious” Future Of The Franchise: “We Can’t Reveal Our Sister Secrets”

Red and Blue are back, and they have a new friend or two! Descendants: Wicked Wonderland is the latest film in Disney’s wildly popular Descendants franchise. Picking up directly from the events of Descendants: Rise of Red, Red (Kylie Cantrall) and Chloe (Malia Baker) are dealing with the repercussions of using Maddox Hatter’s (Leonardo Nam) magic pocket watch to change the future and unite their formally feuding mothers: Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora) and Cinderella (Brandy Norwood).
In this new timeline, Red discovers that she has a younger sister named Pink (Liamani Segura) and that Maddox, her former tutor and friend, is now a villain! When Maddox holds the Queen of Hearts and Wonderland hostage to get his pocket watch back, Red, Chloe and their friends—both villain kids and hero kids—sneak into the kingdom to save the day. Cantrall said fans will definitely get to see Red’s “evolution” in the sequel film. Cantrall explained: “Red’s embracing the fact that she is a hero. She has to step up to the plate and be the leader.” Baker, excited to return to her iconic role as Chloe, aka Blue, added: “Blue and I will never be separated. Returning to her world felt so, so easy.”
For Segura, getting to enter the world of the Descendants as a new character was like a dream come true. Segura remembered being “so inspired” by the film franchise as a kid. “I remember trying to memorize all of the dance moves and the lyrics,” said Segura. “I wanted to have purple and blue hair so bad!” Luckily, pink hair suits her perfectly!
Baker, Cantrall, and Segura stopped by the Decider studio to talk about the latest Descendants film, tease their potential next chapter, and more.
DECIDER: Kylie and Malia, you’re back for round 2! What was it like to return to your iconic characters for Descendants: Wicked Wonderland?
KYLIE CANTRALL: So special. Putting on that red wig has become second nature to me. It feels really cool to grow up with this character and bring my own personal evolution to her. In the last film, Red was rough around the edges. She was definitely more of a villain than anything. By the end, she had evolved into this hero. In this film, we’re picking up where we left off. Now, Red’s embracing the fact that she is a hero. She has to step up to the plate and be a leader and a role model. I tried to take inspiration from her and mirror that on set as well. I wanted to guide our new incredible cast—who just shine in this film. I was happy to be that person for them.
MALIA BAKER: Agreed. It feels really wonderful to be able to say that we literally grew up with these characters. I was 15 when I auditioned to do this project. Now, I’m 19. I am going to experience many chapters of life and learn lessons right alongside this character. Blue and I will never be separated. Returning to her world felt so, so easy. Every day was like a celebration. I don’t think I’m ready to say goodbye to her at all. I hope this isn’t goodbye.

Liamani, you are entering the franchise as Pink, the daughter of the Queen of Hearts and sister of Red who exists in this timeline. Were you a fan of the film series beforehand? What was it like coming into this world?
LIAMANI SEGURA: I was such a big fan. When I was little and coming home from school, the first thing that I would do was turn on the Disney Channel and watch all the DCOMs. Every time that Descendants would be on, I would literally geek out. I remember trying to memorize all of the dance moves and the lyrics. I wanted to have purple and blue hair so badly!
KC: There’s still time.
MB: You’ve got pink now!
LS: [Laughs] I got pink! I remember being so inspired by all of the people in the movies. So, I’m just honored and grateful to be a part of this franchise. It’s such a beautiful thing. And with this cast, oh my gosh, there was not a dull moment on set. We always had so much fun. I feel like you can really see our enthusiasm on the screen.
Kylie, Red forms a surprising connection with Luis Madrigal. Was it fun to explore this side of her?
KC: It was so sweet and wholesome [laughs]. Red showing the softer side of herself and exploring her vulnerability gives her so many dimensions. I remember thinking while filming Rise Of Red, “I hope in the next film Red gets a love interest.” I thought it would be fun to showcase that side of herself. She’s so guarded, so it was great to have Luis break her walls down.
He’s so different from her. It’s that classic VK and HK romance that we saw with Mal and Ben in the first film. It was like, “oh, they’re from different worlds, but they’re coming together.” We captured that same essence with Red and Luis. It’s really cute to see how Luis grows on her. At first, she’s like, “I don’t know about you,” but she warms up to him.
LS: He’s got to get through Pink first.
KC: Exactly!
LS: It was so sweet seeing my older sister falling in love.
Malia, Chloe breaks bad a bit in this film, thanks to a bit of magic from Max Hatter. How fun was it to play Evil Chloe?
MB: So much fun. Chloe has her evil Chloe moment, which I personally love. I remember sitting down with our director Kimmy Gatewood and doinga practice exercise in our green room. She was like, “now act as if you’re the meanest person in the world.” We discovered Evil Chloe’s physicality and talked about little telling changes to her wardrobe, like her dagger turning black. I love those little intricacies.. I still don’t really recognize myself when I see Evil Chloe on the screen. I’m like, “who is that?”
LS: I remember the first day Malia came on set as Evil Chloe. My jaw was literally on the floor. I was thinking, “this is not Malia.” It was such a crazy transition, but she looked absolutely beautiful.

The door is left open for a potential sequel! Kylie and Liamani, what do you think is hidden among Red’s and Pink’s box of treasures?
KM: Do we want to tell them?
LS: I don’t know. Do we want to tell them?
KC: I don’t know if we can reveal all our secrets.
LS: We can’t reveal our sister secrets.
KC: Some things have to remain in Pink’s and Red’s treasure box.
LS: Honestly, what even is in our treasure box, though?
KC: I could say it’s a bunch of cool things that our props department put together, but no! There’s something more mysterious and magical inside. We’re just going to have to wait and find out [laughs].
I know we’re here to talk about the Descendants, but Liamani, you are also in Camp Rock 3. What can you tease about your role in the film? And what are the Jonas brothers like in real life?
LM: After 16 years, the Camp Rock franchise is back! It was so insane seeing the Jonas brothers get back into character. They are so kind. I remember being nervous the first day when everyone was like, “the Jonas Brothers are on set today!” I was so scared to go up to them, but I built up the courage. They were the most down-to-earth people ever and so hilarious. It was a special experience.
My character Sage is very bold and determined. She goes to summer camp with this one goal: to write hit music. Along the way, she meets all of these friends that she really loves who make her remember there’s more to life than fame. I think OG Camp Rock fans are gonna love to this new movie.
