Birmingham City’s Kai Wagner makes shock ‘family’ decision to return to MLS

Family comes first.
Birmingham City left-back Kai Wagner stunned fans on Friday with his “family” decision to return to MLS just seven months after making the move to England.
The German, who spent the previous seven seasons with the Philadelphia Union, finally got his move back to Europe in January following years of transfer speculation.
But the 29-year-old, who shares three children with his wife Jenny, has announced that he’s made the “extremely difficult decision” to return to Philly, where all three of his kids were born.
As he read a statement that he called “one of the hardest messages I’ve ever had to write,” Wagner made it quite evident that he was not happy to be leaving the Championship club.
“I want to make one thing extremely clear: this decision has nothing to do with Birmingham City,” he said. “From the first day, this club welcomed me and my family with open arms.”
He later continued, “The only reason for that decision is my family. As parents, sometimes we have to make choices that are painful but feel right for our children, and for our future.”
While many fans defended Wagner (who made 16 league appearances for Birmingham) for putting his family first, others accused his wife of being behind the move.
“Just take a look at his wife’s Instagram. We know who wears the trousers there and [whose] decision it was,” one wrote on X.
“He was definitely in the doghouse and this was the best way to get out of it,” another chimed in.
Wagner and Jenny have three kids — Liam, Levi and Leya — together.
Amid the move, which cost the Union a bit under $4 million, according to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, one fan dug up an apparent Instagram story from Jenny previously complaining about the kids’ schooling situation.
In the alleged screengrab, which was shared to X, Jenny wrote an angry message about how one of her children couldn’t get into a school despite living right next to it.
Wagner got his well-deserved move to Europe after racking up three MLS All-Star appearances and leaving the Union as the club’s all-time assist leader.

He was involved in transfer rumors dating all the way back to 2022, when Leeds United was reportedly interested in him.
Unsurprisingly, the Union celebrated their move to bring Wagner back.
“Our left back is back home,” they wrote on X.
