Cubs acquire Aaron Civale in trade with A’s as one deadline domino falls

The Cubs are adding to their pitching rotation ahead of this year’s trade deadline.

Chicago acquired right-hander Aaron Civale from the Athletics on Saturday, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed.

The A’s received cash considerations and 22-year-old minor league pitcher Aiden Moffett, according to multiple reports.

Civale, 31, has experienced a rocky season since signing a one-year deal with the Athletics in February.

Through 16 games, Civale holds a 5-7 record with a 5.42 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 74⅔ innings.

He got off to a solid start this season, posting a 3.23 ERA in 60⅔ innings in six starts through March and April, but things have gone downhill since, causing the Athletics to designate the righty for assignment on Wednesday.

This move also sees Civale return to the Cubs nearly a year after the organization claimed him off waivers.

During his brief Cubs stint in 2025, Civale held a 2.08 ERA in five appearances out of the bullpen.

He also tossed 4⅓ scoreless innings in relief in the postseason for Chicago last year.

Civale joins a Cubs team that sits six games behind the Brewers for the top spot in the National League Central and holds the NL’s top wild-card spot.

He also fills a hole for Chicago, which has a dozen arms on the injured list, though starting pitchers Jameson Taillon and Edward Cabrera are expected to make a return soon.

Cubs ace Justin Steele, who hasn’t pitched since April 7, 2025, is also expected to start throwing off a mound in August.

“The hope is that guys can start getting healthy and trickling back, and we can keep getting good news on guys,” Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said Friday, according to MLB.com.

“It’d be great to be in that position,” he added.

Chicago previously traded with the Mets for lefty David Peterson, who has an 8.16 ERA in three starts with the Cubs.
