Lionel Messi’s quest for two consecutive World Cup titles came to an end up Sunday — now the question becomes whether it will be his last appearance on soccer’s biggest stage.

If that is the case, his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, provided a powerful tribute to her husband via an Instagram post on Monday.

Roccuzzo posted a photo of a teary-eyed Messi on the field after Argentina’s 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup Final and another of his teammates throwing him up in the air.

“You will always be the best, @leomessi. Not just because of your talent, but because you have never stopped being yourself. Because no matter what happens, you never give up; you always fight to the very end and give it your all until the final second,” the caption read in Spanish.

“That strength, that mindset, and the way you pick yourself up time and time again are what make you unique. 🤍 Thank you for showing us every day that true success is built through hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance—without ever losing sight of who you really are.

“You are the best example for our children and an inspiration to millions of people. I admire you more than words can express, and I feel immensely proud to walk through life by your side. I love you so much. 🤍”

Messi couldn’t find the back of the net against Spain, ending his 2026 World Cup with eight goals.

The 39-year-old has already accomplished everything there is to accomplish in his legendary career.

Messi seemingly hasn’t made a decision about his international future. But given his age, the fact that he’ll be 43 during the next World Cup, and how emotional he was after losing to Spain on Sunday has many believing that match will be the last time he wears an Argentina jersey on the field.
