‘My Grandfather Charles Manson’ Documentary on Hulu: Who is Sophia Maddox?

My Grandfather Charles Manson, which released on Hulu today, is more than your typical true crime documentary.
From the title you can expect a deep dive into Charles Manson and the atrocities he and his cult were responsible for. At the same time, you can experience a daughter and her father processing the news they are related to someone who could commit such horrific crimes.
The documentary is co-directed by Alexandra Orton and Sophia Maddox, the subject of the documentary. Maddox was compelled to make the documentary after her father finally reveals a DNA confirms they are related to Charles Manson, the infamous cult leader. She aims to explore the truth about her grandfather as she traces Manson’s past, forcing she and her father to confront many painful truths about their existence.
It’s a film that brings up many themes of nurture vs. nature and questions whether violent, sociopathic tendencies can be passed down by blood. The film will show new details of the horror and mystery behind the Manson Family commune, and also how this news impacts Maddox’s dynamic with her father. If you’re up for this tough watch, here’s everything you should know about My Grandfather Charles Manson.

Maddox is a 26-year-old actress and filmmaker who currently lives in Los Angeles. Her father, Daniel Arguelles, told her the news as they were driving to get her a COVID test.
Maddox tried to deny her relation to the criminal, but when her father’s DNA test came back 99.9 percent positive, she could no longer avoid the truth, “My mental reality completely shifted. My existence changed because of this revelation.”
From here, Maddox decided to turn her pain into a film depicting the long journey of acceptance. Maddox produced the documentary through her production company Joan of Arc Pictures. To learn more, you can find her on Instagram @sophiawph.
What is the true story of My Grandfather Charles Manson?
The true story behind My Grandfather Charles Manson is two ordinary people discovering they are related to one of the most well-known criminals in American history.
In the film, Maddox grapples with the idea because she and her father never even remotely exhibited any signs of Manson’s violent traits. Per Hulu, Maddox’s “discovery propels her into an underworld of Manson family members and unreliable narrators as she traces her grandfather’s life.”

She told The Guardian that she made the film as a way for her father to heal, “I hope he feels seen. I hope he feels seen because he lived a lot of his life with people turning a blind eye.”
She added, “I also hope he’s proud of me, that I’ve dug deep into our generational trauma, our mental health generational trauma as well, and I hope he can see that if I am able to get past it, he can too.”
