Curtis Mead’s Red Sox career started off on a scary note.

The 25-year-old infielder left his Sox debut Monday night after being hit in the hand with a pitch.

In the top of the fourth inning with Boston trailing the A’s by one run, Mead took a 94-mph fastball from the Athletics’ Jack Perkins to his left hand.

His bat flew out of his hands and Mead grimaced while walking to to first base before being removed, exiting the field with a trainer.

The Aussie native was only acquired from the Nationals on Saturday.

However, it doesn’t seem the Red Sox may be without him for too long.

“Sore. They did get X-Rays, which are negative, which is good,” interim manager Chad Tracy said about Mead following Boston’s 4-2 win.

“He’s sore. We’re just gonna take it day to day and see how he feels coming in. A little sore but at least right now it looks like we dodged a bullet maybe.”

In exchange for Mead, Boston gave up 24-year-old Connelly Early, who has a 3.44 ERA this season across 17 starts.

The move helped the Red Sox stock up their infield for their playoff push three months after firing Alex Cora.

The Red Sox (55-50) hold the second slot in the American League Wild-Card race, and sit in third place in the AL East.

Mead has emerged this season after previously struggling to live up to expectations as a top prospect.

He initially signed with the Phillies out of Adelaide, Australia in 2018 before he was dealt to the Rays in November 2019 for lefty pitcher Cristopher Sánchez.

Mead finished the 2025 season with the White Sox before being traded to Washington in March.

He holds a career-high .851 OPS across 87 games, tallying 17 homers and 48 RBIs.
