New details emerge in Kyle Shanahan crash — including who was at fault

The details of the car accident involving 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan have been scant.

But On SI’s Grant Cohn appears to have uncovered a new element of the crash. Shanahan was reportedly holding a cell phone during the accident, while the other driver was at fault for the collision.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suffered serious injuries in a car crash near his home in Northern California on July 14.

Cohn found the latest detail of the crash via a public government website.

On Saturday, the 49ers issued a press release regarding the car crash only moments before general manager John Lynch spoke to the media to kickoff training camp.

While the accident had occurred almost two weeks before the news broke, reporters who did know of the crash had complied with the team’s wishes to hold the story.

Naturally, there have been several questions about the accident. Some have speculated that the mysterious nature of the situation indicates Shanahan is somehow at fault. That theory hasn’t been confirmed and many reporters and internet sleuths have tried to uncover any alleged illicit details.

The facts, however, remain the same.

Shanahan’s vehicle collided with another shortly after 6 p.m. near his home in Palo Alto, Calif. The 46-year-old suffered a severe concussion as well as several broken bones in the two-car accident. One of his face wounds required 40 stitches.

Shanahan also nearly lost an eye, according to Chris Simms, who is a close friend of Shanahan. Simms also revealed the other driver in the crash was a woman.

Despite the ongoing recovery, Shanahan made an appearance at 49ers training camp over the weekend but the team has deployed assistant head coach Chris Foerster as the interim head coach.
