A fierce second-alarm fire tore through a commercial building in Vernon on Thursday afternoon, sending towering flames and heavy smoke billowing into the air as firefighters rushed to contain the blaze.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said the fire broke out just before 3:20 p.m. at a commercial property in the 4600 block of Hampton Street.

Crews arriving at the scene encountered intense flames and dense smoke pouring from the structure, with dramatic plumes visible from the area, according to LA County Fire.

Firefighters remained on scene battling the second-alarm blaze.
