Living in New York City means logging a lot — and I mean a lot — of steps.

Between commuting to and from the office and running around to events and dinners after work, I average around 10,000 paces per day, which means my shoes need to be as functional as they are fashionable. Sometimes I’ll go with sneakers or flats, but many days, I’m looking for something more (literally) elevated for meetings, parties and the like.

Enter Margaux, the New York brand that’s famous for its ballet flats, but also happens to make the most comfortable heels I’ve found thus far. I discovered the company a little over a year ago, when I was on the hunt for a great block-heeled, open-toed summer shoe. I gave the City Sandal a try, and it was love at first wear.

With its 2.5-inch heel height, it’s the perfect all-day sandal for work, weekends and weddings alike. The crisscrossing straps are supple and soft, and the cushioned insole (padded with 5 millimeters of plush foam) means you can stand, stroll or dance for hours without your arches aching.

In addition to matching basically everything in my closet, the shoes required minimal break-in time — not just a plus, in my book, but a must.

It’s no wonder the City Sandal‘s racked up hundreds of five-star reviews, with shoppers hailing them as “perfect,” “so incredibly comfortable” and “gorgeous workhorse wedding shoes.”

The style’s so ideal for all-night celebrations, in fact, that it’s now being marketed as a bridal heel, available in ivory and silver as well as several pretty pastel shades. You can even customize them with a monogram and a crystal buckle, if you’re feeling particularly fancy.

For something more neutral, consider the equally excellent Paloma Sandal, which is built on the same last and every bit as comfy and chic as its predecessor.

I should know: After a year of wearing my City Sandals nonstop, I ordered the Palomas — which boast a slightly curved heel and a slimmer ankle strap closure — in both black and nude, and I think I might love them even more.

If you’re looking for more of a lift, meanwhile, I can’t recommend Margaux’s Paloma Platform enough.

Featuring the same upper as its sister style, it’s got a 1-inch platform and 3.5-inch block heel that make it a no-brainer for special events. (I recently wore my black suede pair for a full workday followed by an event that involved hours of standing around and schmoozing, and my feet didn’t hurt one bit.)

Comfort and style aside, Margaux’s inclusive sizing sets it apart from fellow footwear brands. Its shoes are available in an impressive range of full and half sizes, from 3.5 US (33.5 EU) all the way up 14 US (45 EU), as well as in medium, wide and narrow widths.

I find the brand to run true to size; I typically wear a 10.5 US (41.5 EU), and that size fit me well in every Margaux style I’ve tried thus far. One note: The straps across the top of the foot can feel snug at first, but they’ll loosen up a bit after one or two wears.

At just south of $400 per pair, Margaux’s heels are definitely investments — but as someone who straight-up refuses to wear shoes that hurt, they’re well worth it to me.
