A slew of high-profile shows are returning in August. The new season of Taylor Sheridan’s Lioness recently debuted on Paramount+; Prime Video’s immensely popular action thriller Reacher returns on August 12; and the second season of Leanne arrives on Netflix at the end of the month.

One show that’s unfortunately missing from that list is ABC’s The Rookie.

What exactly can fans expect after THAT season finale when the beloved series returns with new episodes? Showrunner Alexi Hawley offered a hint while attending San Diego Comic-Con.

“There are definitely things that are going to be different,” Hawley said. “We all try and shake things up from season to season…I never want to make the same season twice.”

It was also revealed that the upcoming season will begin with a two-part episode. When exactly does the new season of The Rookie premiere on ABC and Hulu? Here’s everything we know.

Is The Rookie New Tonight (August 3)?

Nope. Tonight’s ABC primetime schedule features a new episode of Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro, followed by reruns of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and Celebrity Family Feud.

Has The Rookie Been Renewed For Season 9?

Yes! Back in April, ABC renewed The Rookie for a ninth season.

When Does Season 9 of The Rookie Come Out?

Sadly, The Rookie isn’t on ABC’s upcoming fall schedule. It was announced at the Disney Upfront event that High Potential, Will Trent, and The Rookie will all be held for midseason premieres. Official release dates have yet to be announced, but all three programs will return in early 2027, with our best guess being early January.

High Potential and Will Trent will most likely air on Tuesdays, with The Rookie and the upcoming spinoff The Rookie: North, which stars Jay Ellis, Janet Montgomery, Karen Fukuhara, Chris Sullivan, Froy Gutierrez, Mya Lowe, and Malik Watson — going back-to-back on Mondays.
