David Bailey already ‘a pain’ for Armand Membou in Jets’ training camp practices

The young offensive tackle has only had a few training camp practices opposite the Jets rookie, but the edge rusher has already left an impression on Membou.

“It’s been a pain, man,” he joked Monday after the first padded practice of camp. “He’s a great player. He’s just smooth, he’s quick, he’s got a natural ability to rush the passer. It’s been a good matchup going against him.

“With his first step, he has the ability to threaten tackles with his speed off the edge, and once he does that, he can threaten you with that power.”

Bailey was the second overall pick in April’s draft after registering 14.5 sacks at Texas Tech last season. The hope is he can help improve a pass rush that was 31st in the league a year ago with a paltry 26 sacks.

Rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq, coming off a hernia operation in May, was given a day off Monday after taking part in the first three practices of training camp, coach Aaron Glenn said. … Glenn does not expect defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat (hamstring), defensive end Joseph Ossai (undisclosed) or cornerback D’Angelo Ponds (calf) to return to practice this week, but he doesn’t believe the trio will miss much more time.

“We want to be very careful with all three of those guys,” he said. “Listen, we have a role for all three of them. … I don’t think they’ll be out too much longer, but we want to do the right thing and make sure we have those guys ready for the regular season.”

Monday marked the first padded practice of Jets camp.

“I thought the competitive nature was right where we wanted it to be,” Glenn said. “I think our guys are really understanding exactly how we want to practice.”
