Why Clint Eastwood refused to buy ‘furious’ son Scott a car

Growing up as a child of Clint Eastwood may not be as glamorous as it seems.

The Oscar-winning director’s youngest son, Scott Eastwood, recalled his dad refusing to buy him a car to get to work in order to teach him the value of money.

“My dad wouldn’t buy me a car,” he revealed on Monday’s episode of the “Armchair Expert” podcast. “I made that pitch and that didn’t go well.”

After high school, Scott attended Santa Barbara City College, where he worked as a barback in a “seedier area” — and got around on a bicycle.

Although the actor admitted he was “furious” at his dad at the time, looking back, the tough love was “probably for the best” for several reasons.

“One, the value of money and what that is and learning respect for that… I think that’s the principal lesson that he wanted me to know, that like this doesn’t grow on trees and you better go out and earn it.”

“Also giving your kid a car at 18 or 19, are you drinking and driving? Are you doing something stupid?”

Despite decades of success, the “Fury” star revealed that his famous father is still frugal to this day.

“He’s not a material guy. He comes from a very different generation,” Scott explained. “He was born in 1930, so he saw the real lows of the Great Depression and that stuck with him forever.”

“He still to this day will be telling you to turn off a light if you left the house. Like, ‘Why the hell didn’t you turn off the light?’”

Clint was unaware of his eldest child, Laurie Murray, born in 1954, and she was placed for adoption. The two reconnected years later.

He welcomed his second child, Kimber Lynn, with Roxanne Tunis in 1964. Four years later, Clint welcomed his first son, Kyle, with his first wife, Maggie Johnson. They also share daughter Alison.

Scott was born in 1986 to Clint and flight attendant Jacelyn Reeves. The former couple also welcomed daughter Kathryn.

The Western TV legend went on to welcome daughter Francesca with British actress Frances Fisher and another daughter Morgan with ex-wife Dina Eastwood.

Clint has seemingly always raised his kids with tough love as Scott revealed the harsh advice his dad gave him when he first wanted to become an actor.

“He didn’t care if I was a plumber or if I was an actor,” Scott told Treats! magazine in 2015. “He just said, ‘Whatever you do, do it well. Be humble, work hard and be a man.’”
