A new season of Apple TV‘s Emmy-winning comedy Ted Lasso means new cast members, characters, and even new AFC Richmond players.

While fan-favorites like Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Keeley (Juno Temple), Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein), Beard (Brendan Hunt), and Higgins (Jeremy Swift) will be back for Season 4, with Ted (Jason Sudeikis) returning to Richmond to coach the new women’s team, fans have a number of new players to meet as well.

As Decider noted in our Ted Lasso Season 4 review, Boots is the Lady Greyhounds’ fearless, glove-less goalkeeper. Boots has a big ego and the stats to back it up, but is she bluffing a bit? Only time will tell!

When Decider chatted with Mack ahead of Ted Lasso‘s Season 4 premiere, here’s what they had to say about Boots and “absolutely terrible” experience of filming those intense soccer/football scenes without gloves.

“I think most of my acting in this show is me trying not to scream and flinch when those pro footballers were kicking the ball at like 90 mph at the goal. And I have to be like, ‘I don’t fear the ball!’ It was crazy,” Mack told Decider over Zoom. Despite challenges on the pitch, the Season 4 star was ecstatic to land the unique role in Ted Lasso.

“I think it’s such a gift to play a character who’s arrogant and thinks she’s the best. I think that is really fun and quite rare. [This season] it’s less about her ego getting a hit, and it’s more about her moving [away] from that isolated individualist position that she’s in as the goalkeeper towards community and connection,” Mack explained. “I think there is something for her to learn about putting the gloves on, or not putting the gloves on, and what does that mean for her, and what’s she holding herself back from.”

Boots on Ted Lasso is played by Jude Mack, a British actor, writer, director, and London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art alum who has a variety of TV and film credits on IMDb. Since 2015, Mack has starred in projects including Prime Target, The Capture, Waiting for the Out, Such Brave Girls, Back in Action, Playing Nice, I Hate Suzie, Anansi Boys, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and more. Per Mack’s IMDb bio, they also co-created and starred in the comedy pilot Amicable, produced by Avalon for BBC Three. And Mack has starred in stage productions as well.
