About 10 days before George Lombard Jr. was called up by the Yankees, a longtime American League executive who’d seen the shortstop the previous week was asked if Lombard was ready for the majors.

“If anyone doesn’t think he’s ready right now, they don’t know what they’re watching,’’ the exec said. “They should get another job.”

Two weeks into his major league career, Lombard has provided plenty of evidence that he was, indeed, “ready right now.”

“Obviously, I’m not surprised,’’ the exec said Monday. “He just looks the part. Always has. There are going to be ups and downs, but he’s built for this. All of it.”
