George Lombard Jr. eager to carve own Yankees path as Derek Jeter comps begin during blazing start

BALTIMORE — The comparisons have been there for a while, and certainly since George Lombard Jr. made his debut with the Yankees earlier this month.
At shortstop, he can make plays up the middle and deep in the hole to his right, as Lombard did in Tuesday’s win over the Orioles, when he took a hit away from Christian Encarnacion-Strand to open the bottom of the fourth.
At the plate, Lombard has been the Yankees’ second-best hitter since his Aug. 4 call-up, displaying power and an ability to hit to all fields.
And on Tuesday, again, there were a pair of singles through the hole on the right side of the infield that looked familiar.
