Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has been very candid throughout the entire ordeal around star Ketel Marte’s mysterious absence, and his love for the player didn’t change the harshness of what he was feeling as it all went down.   

“Once I saw what was unfolding, I became extremely frustrated,” Lovullo told reporters Friday night. “I felt betrayed. And that’s a whole different type of pain and frustration. But I’m through that.”

The three-time All-Star went AWOL for the team’s game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Monday and left the team searching for answers. 

The team placed Marte on the 10-day injured list with left knee inflammation on Thursday after he met with Lovullo and general manager Mike Hazen.

Lovullo initially said Marte was dealing with a personal issue when the baffling ordeal began before his injury was revealed. 

Team CEO Derrick Hall described the situation Thursday as a “complete mystery” and “bizarre.”

Marte was not in the clubhouse on Friday, but he was spotted at the Talking Stick Resort casino for four hours while his team beat the Reds 9-0 at Chase Field, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

Lovullo didn’t seem to have a problem with it as long as Marte was showing up for his rehab work at the team’s spring training facility, like he did earlier Friday.

“He’s free to do whatever he wants. That’s how I look at it,” Lovullo told reporters postgame. “As long as he wakes up tomorrow morning … and gets his work done at Salt River [Fields], which I am certain he will, that’s all that matters to me right now.’

Marte received an injection for left knee inflammation, per MLB.com.

The team’s hope is the slugger can return in a minimum of 10 days. 

“There’s right ways to handle things and wrong ways to handle things,” Lovullo said. “I think the conclusion that was drawn up yesterday was that we could have been better. Ketel could have been better, specifically. Admittedly so.”

The drama is happening at the worst possible time for Arizona as the team tries to secure a playoff berth with 34 games to go.

The Diamondbacks are a game behind the Padres for the final National League wild-card spot.

Marte is a big part of their success, hitting .249 with 21 homers, 67 RBIs and an .893 OPS. 

“I want to manage baseball games,” Lovullo said. “I want to do what I love doing between the white lines and not have to answer these types of questions. … I don’t love the drama that follows this ballclub. I want to be a good baseball team and we’ve got to figure this out.”
