Allison Janney is having a blast walking through the corridors of The White House again on The Diplomat and it’s paying off handsomely with the TV Academy.

Chatting with DECIDER at Televerse 2026 in Los Angeles, the iconic actress opened up about being a double nominee at the Emmy Awards this year, receiving a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Diplomat and a nod as part of the cast in Miss You, Love You.

“I’m very excited about it,” Janney told DECIDER of having both projects recognized this year. “Obviously with The Diplomat, I’m thrilled for that nomination and the nominations are all so well deserved by all my cast and Debora [Cahn], the show is just the best.”

Aside from her own nomination, The Diplomat picked up six other nominations this year, with nods for Keri Russell in Best Leading Actress in a Drama Series, Rufus Sewelll for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Bradley Whitford for Guest Actor in a Drama Series, and an overall nom for Outstanding Drama Series. It’s a great recognition for a series Janney says she is already honored to be a part of, especially because she finds it as fun as it is rewarding.

“I’m having the greatest time on it and proud to be playing the president of the United States — a female president of the United States,” the actress added, emphasizing the dissatisfaction in the role still being a fictional concept and getting to reunite with Bradley Whitford, her co-star from The West Wing.

She’s also no stranger to a complex examination of interpersonal relationships like the one in her other project, Miss You, Love You. In that project, the actress plays a grieving wife who is shocked when her absentee son sends his assistant (Andrew Rannells) to take care of her after the death of her husband. Janney says that after working so closely with writer-director Jim Rash and Rannells to craft her character, Diane, it’s genuinely heartwarming to see the film release and get a warm reception from the critics, audience members, and TV Academy voters who have recognized the fine-tuning that went into every scene.

“Miss You, Love You is a movie that Jim has been trying to get done for a long time, so to finally have it, finally get it made, and finally get a home at HBO and to see the recognition it’s got is just, it’s just just a real honor,” she explained, “I’m very grateful and excited for Jim, too, because it is his baby.”

The actress will have to wait until September to find out if either of her two starring roles were enough to score her another Emmy win; Janney currently has a total of 16 nominations and is sitting at seven wins heading into next month’s ceremony. Can President Grace Pinn win it all?

The Diplomat is streaming on Netflix. Miss You, Love You is streaming on HBO Max. The Emmy Awards air live on NBC Monday, September 14.
