Giants wide receiver Calvin Austin carted off with apparent major knee injury in brutal training camp scene

New York Giants wide receiver Calvin Austin III was carted off the field after appearing to suffer a serious right knee injury.

Austin’s knee buckled during a 1-on-1 drill with cornerback Deonte Banks, and he crumpled to the ground. The wide receivers and defensive backs participating in the drills couldn’t even look as trainers attended to Austin, according to The Athletic.

The wide receivers and defensive backs gathered in a circle for a prayer. The entire team stopped what it was doing to wish the 27-year-old wide receiver well as he was carted off.

Owner John Mara went over to see Austin on the cart, according to multiple reports.

Austin signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract, worth up to $4.5 million, with the Giants in the offseason. He was signed to replace Wan’Dale Robinson’s production in the slot, as Robinson signed with the Tennessee Titans in the offseason.

He had had a strong training camp and preseason and seemed poised for a large role in the Giants’ offense.

Austin spent the first three seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Memphis. Over three seasons, he missed just three games.

In 48 games, he recorded 84 receptions for 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns while also serving as an effective punt returner. In his career, he’s averaged 8.9 yards per return and returned one punt for a touchdown in 2024.

Last season with the Steelers, in 14 games, Austin had 31 catches for 372 yards and three touchdowns.

If Austin is out for a significant period, it likely opens up a spot for Odell Beckham Jr. to make the roster. The Giants star re-signed with the team in June and has been on the roster bubble all offseason.

Beckham could replace Austin in the slot and carve out a legitimate role in the offense.
