Former President Barack Obama will headline a fund-raiser for House Democrats on Sept. 10 in New York with Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the minority leader, as Democrats try to restock their political war chest before the final sprint to the fall midterm elections.

Mr. Obama is set to attend a reception and dinner, with proceeds going to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, according to a copy of the invitation obtained by The New York Times.

The dinner is set for the second night of Republicans’ unusual two-day midterm convention in Dallas, which President Trump pushed for as an effort to mobilize his party’s voters. But the Democratic fund-raiser in New York is not necessarily counterprogramming: Two people familiar with the plans, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the private event, said that Mr. Obama’s appearance was expected to be entirely behind closed doors.

“House Democrats are grateful for President Barack Obama’s strong support in our effort to take back the House,” Justin Chermol, a spokesman for Mr. Jeffries, said in a statement. He said Democrats would be focused on their affordability agenda “while MAGA extremists celebrate the failures of Republican-controlled government at their so-called midterm convention.”

Money is a top concern for Democrats headed into the fall. The leading Republican committees, especially the Republican National Committee, have far more cash on hand than their Democratic counterparts. And President Trump’s super PAC, MAGA Inc., which has yet to reveal its midterm spending plans, has more than $400 million in the bank.

The D.C.C.C., House Democrats’ campaign arm, entered August with $80.2 million in its treasury, compared with $92.4 million for the National Republican Congressional Committee. All told, the D.C.C.C. has raised slightly more money this election cycle.

Mr. Obama remains one of the Democratic Party’s most desired surrogates and powerful fund-raisers. He is set to headline another fund-raiser in the coming days on Martha’s Vineyard for the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, which plays a key role in the fight over gerrymandered congressional maps.

Mr. Obama has begun more public political engagements, as well, recently recording a video playing basketball with the Democratic nominee for Senate in Iowa, Josh Turek, who was a two-time Paralympic gold medalist on the U.S. men’s wheelchair basketball team.

Mr. Obama also made an appearance in Texas to buy tacos with James Talarico, the state’s Democratic nominee for Senate. And the former president called Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, the party’s nominee in Michigan, after a divisive primary, as well as his primary rival, Representative Haley Stevens.

Mr. Obama previously headlined a fund-raiser with Mr. Jeffries in late 2025 in the Los Angeles area. One person familiar with the event said it had raised $2 million.
