Yankees’ Trent Grisham lands on injured list as key question looms
SAN DIEGO — Trent Grisham is back on the injured list.
After tweaking his right hamstring Friday night at Petco Park while getting caught stealing and then being unable to run down a fly ball in front of him, the Yankees center fielder landed on the IL Saturday with a right hamstring strain.
It is the same injury that cost him three weeks on the IL in June — the same amount of time that is now left in the regular season — though the veteran said Friday night it was in a different spot.
Grisham was set to undergo imaging to determine the severity of the strain, but the Yankees called up Jasson Domínguez on Saturday to take his spot at least until Aaron Judge returns from his own injury, as early as the upcoming homestand.
“It’s disappointing, for sure,” Grisham said Friday night. “But that’s part of the game. We know what we’re signing up for. Hopefully it’s nothing too problematic.”
Whether Grisham can play again this season remains to be seen, though his IL placement solves a dilemma that was coming for the Yankees in how to open a roster spot for Judge — and who was going to start in center field once the captain returned to right field.

Grisham had been scuffling of late, batting 4-for-44 (.091) with a .414 OPS over his last 14 games, and his defense in center field was not up to par.
Jones, meanwhile, has been surging — including a 10th-inning, go-ahead hit off Padres closer Mason Miller on Friday night — and his athleticism allows him to cover more ground in center.
Now, Jones will likely get the majority of the time in center field moving forward, though once Judge gets back, Cody Bellinger could shift there against lefties to get Heliot Ramos in the lineup in left field.
