Anthony Volpe ‘became Barry Bonds’ over two weeks in Triple-A: Jasson Dominguez
Jasson Domínguez joined the Yankees on Saturday from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he was on a strong run at the plate — but still not enough to be the hottest hitter on the team.
That title belonged to Anthony Volpe, who entered Saturday having crushed five home runs in his past five games — a span in which he was hitting 12-for-17 (.706) with a 2.527 OPS — and eight in his past 14 games.
“He became Barry Bonds all of a sudden, hitting a homer every day,” Domínguez said with a grin. “It’s crazy.”
Since he was demoted to Triple-A and replaced by George Lombard Jr. last month, Volpe has been bouncing around between shortstop, second base and third base to give him some defensive flexibility and increase his chances of getting back to the Yankees should they suffer an injury.
In the meantime, though, Volpe, , who went 1-for-3 with two walks in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s loss on Saturday night, has been beating up on Triple-A pitching after hitting just one home run in 56 big league games this season.
“He’s working his ass off to get better, and you can see it every day, I’m telling you,” said Domínguez, who entered Saturday’s game in the sixth inning in right field and went 0-for-1 with a long flyout to center field. “I feel like the last two weeks, he’s hit a homer every day.”
