HBO‘s newest must-watch Sunday night drama is Lanterns, a grown up and gritty take on the Green Lanterns comics that’s got us googling “Manhunters” and revisiting Ryan Reynolds’ flop movie version with fresh eyes.

Last week’s all-new episode of Lanterns gave us a glimpse into John Stewart’s (Aaron Pierre) backstory. We learned that after his father, John Sr. (J. Alphonse Nicholson) was passed over by the Guardians to be a Green Lantern, his mother Bernadette (Jasmine Cephas-Jones) made a sort of deal with a Guardian in Laura Linney drag to raise her infant son to be fearless enough to take up the mantle when he grew up. Hence, John Stewart was raised having apples shot off his head while Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) got to yuk it up all over the universe.

Now that we know that the Guardians have indeed tapped John to be Hal’s replacement, how will the tension between the two men affect the great Manhunter hunt? Will they miss vital clues? Or team up despite their acrimony to save the day?
