A Titans linebacker finds himself in the NFL’s concussion protocol following an accident over the weekend involving a utility terrain vehicle. 

Cedric Gray sustained a concussion and minor injuries as a result of the accident, which occurred in Tennessee, the Titans announced in a statement on Monday. 

“We look forward to Cedric returning to the field soon and in full health when he clears the NFL’s concussion protocol,” the team said in the statement. 

ESPN reported that no alcohol or reckless driving played a factor in the incident. 

With Gray in concussion protocol, his status for the Titans season opener against the Jets on Sunday is up in the air. 

In order for him to be able to play Sunday, Gray would need to complete a return-to-participation program that would include exams and clearance from a neurological consultant independent of the team. 

If the consultant agrees with the club physician’s clearance of the player’s concussion, then he would be able to play in the team’s next game. 

Gray was fourth in the NFL in 2025 with 164 tackles after starting 16 games for the Titans. 

Tennessee drafted Gray in the fourth round in 2024 out of North Carolina. 

Gray isn’t the first NFL player to suffer an injury due to the use of some variation of an ATV. 

Xavier McKinney was involved in a scary incident with one while a member of the Giants in 2022 during a bye week trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. 

The accident resulted in McKinney missing seven games during the 2022 season and he later said he was close to losing three fingers. 

Georgia transfer running back Dante Dowdell had been involved in an ATV accident in his home state of Mississippi in July that left him with a punctured lung, broken ribs, broken collarbones, nerve damage in his right arm and required nine staples.
