Modern Nazis?

We all need to be greatly concerned about the victory of the rise of the Alternative für Deutschland in Germany (“Germany Learns a Familiar Lesson,” Editorial, Sept. 9). 

After all, the AfD supports Vladimir Putin, it  wants to deport all the Ukrainian war refugees and  to ban all displays of the rainbow flag. Therefore, electing these individuals to public office is equivalent to electing pro-Putin far-right American lunatics like Nick Fuentes, Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens to office. 

I realize the AfD leaders have claimed they want to stop the fundamentalist Islamization of Germany. However, I think this election proves that we also need to stop the re-Nazification of Germany.

Energy nightmare

At some point even the most blinkered observer will notice the cost of energy never goes down when there’s geopolitical instability in the Middle East (“Crude oil hits another peak,” Sept. 8). 

While “kick their ass, take their gas” plays well on a bumper sticker, such macho bluster never delivers anything but higher prices and shattered alliances.

The real solution is to stop importing energy from the world’s most volatile region, focusing instead on renewables and weatherization.

President Trump’s now-it’s-a-war-now-it’s-not in Iran has weakened the United States while draining the bank accounts of working families. We can, and must, be wiser than this.

Fascist force attire

Trump has announced his new uniforms for the US Space Force inspired by “Starship Troopers (“Trump’s Troopers,” Sept. 8).”

He evidently didn’t get the memo that the movie’s director, Paul Verhoeven, explicitly stated that “Starship Troopers” was intended to ironically create a “fascist utopia.” He described the characters in the film as “fascists who aren’t aware of their fascism.” 

Odd that Verhoeven used that turn of phrase — it’s almost as though he had anticipated Trump and his MAGA movement 30 years ago.

AI’s idiocy

If artificial intelligence is so intelligent and dangerous, why does it make so many mistakes (“Warnings of our extinction,” Sept. 10)? 

Almost every time I check its veracity against Wikipedia, AI loses. In fact, when I communicate these errors to the system, it corrects them instantly, but that only lasts about a day before it reverts back to giving the wrong information. 

The way is see it, if AI decides it wants to eliminate humanity and take over the world, we shouldn’t be worried or afraid. Fun fact: AI is statistically correct between 45-91% of the time, depending on the subject matter and Wikipedia is solidly measured at 80-95% consistently.

Heartless judge

What in god’s name is wrong with Judge Janice Robinson (“Blood on Her Hands,” Editorial, Sept. 9)?

 What will it take for her to be removed or suspended? A poor law-abiding citizen or a child getting killed? 

Obviously, the man who allegedly did the parade shooting is a menace to society. Get him off the streets once and for all. 

I’d like to know how Robinson would feel if a member of her family, a relative or close friend got shot. She has to go!
