Alexander Zverev downs Ben Shelton to win US Open title and extend American men’s drought

The Great American Drought continues.
Top-ranked Alexander Zverev defeated Ben Shelton to win the U.S. Open men’s final on Sunday, extending the American men’s Grand Slam dry spell to 23 years.
Germany’s Zverev took the first two sets, 6-3, 7-6, but with the crowd behind his every point, Shelton took No. 3, 7-6.
The 23-year-old Floridian acknowledged — and even encouraged — the Flushing, Queens crowd as he mounted a rally that ultimately fell short.
For Zverev, the win marks the completion of a U.S. Open journey that saw him finish as the runner-up in 2020.
