You can’t smell carbon monoxide.

That was the eerie warning plastered across one TikToker’s video, which highlighted several news stories regarding carbon monoxide deaths. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless gas. When it’s inhaled, it binds to the body’s red blood cells and starves the body of oxygen.

These kinds of headlines are nothing new, and devastating incidents like this are still happening. Earlier this summer, five family members died following carbon monoxide poisoning inside a vehicle. Back in March, the family of ex-Yankees player Brett Gardner sued a Costa Rican resort over their son’s death.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that every home should have a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm. 

Unfortunately, a recent study found that almost half of Airbnbs lack this device. That’s prompted some people to point out the importance of bringing one with you while traveling. CO detectors are readily available on Amazon, with some trusted models for under $30.

In one viral TikTok, a woman stressed why she brings one with her whenever she goes on vacation.

“Carbon monoxide is the reason,” she explained. “I take this everywhere when I am on vacation. It’s going to alert me if there’s carbon monoxide…There are way too many news stories like this. Get you one of these. Go on vacation and keep you and your family safe.”
