It’s been five months since FOX’s hit medical dramedy Best Medicine‘s Season 1 finale aired and left viewers with some serious cliffhangers and a craving for more small-town charm. But have no fear, our return to Port Wenn is nearly here!

When we last left Liz Tuccillo’s feel-good comfort watch — based on the hit UK series Doc Martin — Port Wenn’s local physician Dr. Martin Best (Josh Charles) was just informed he could lose his medical license for having Elaine (Cree) take blood to help him manage his phobia. On top of his professional troubles, Martin was also navigating the return of his ex, Eden (Eliza Coupe), and his feelings for Louisa (Abigail Spencer), who’s considering having a baby with her ex, Sheriff Mark (Josh Segarra). Before Season 1 wrapped, Greg (Stephen Spinella) and George (Jason Veasey) also tied the knot, and Aunt Sarah (Annie Potts) found “sea urchins for miles” that could make the entire town rich. So what happens next?

Ahead of Best Medicine‘s Season 2 premiere on Tuesday, September 22, DECIDER has an exclusive first look at what’s ahead, featuring exciting teases from Charles, Spencer, Segarra, Spinella, Veasey, Potts, and Cree.

1. Martin’s Blood Phobia And Medical Career (Feat. Jack Cutmore-Scott)

   “When we first meet Martin in Season 2, he’s got a lot going on,” Charles warns in the first look teaser. Though he’s still Port Wenn’s doctor, he’ll need to work through his blood phobia while dealing with Parker (Jack Cutmore-Scott), “a charming and friendly guy who comes to Port Wenn as Martin’s professional ‘monitor’ to oversee Martin’s medical compliance.”

   “He doesn’t want [the blood phobia] being held over his head anymore,” Charles explains. “Very early on in the season, there is a moment where it feels right to tell the town.” By telling the town, he may literally mean yelling, “I have a blood phobia! And now my entire medical career is in jeopardy,” which, honestly, looks cathartic!

   As the Maine State Medical Registry investigates Martin, his gal Eden is determined to get him over his phobia and back to Boston so he can get “the respect” he deserves. And naturally, Martin’s loved ones like Aunt Sarah fear, “If he’s able to conquer [the phobia], we might lose him.”

3. Eden Returns For Best…Or Worst

   Speaking of Eden, Eliza Coupe is back in town! “She’s now going back and forth between Boston and Port Wenn because of Louisa’s IVF journey,” Spencer explains. “And her and Martin are together.”

   How do Martin and the people of Port Wenn feel about the new visitor? “She’s rearranged his office, and I think rubbed a lot of the town the wrong way,” Charles says. “They certainly don’t like what she’s brought back out in Martin. They obviously have medicine in common. They have a history together. I think there is a connection there, but it always feels like it’s slightly missing. I think his connection to Louisa is a big part of it.”

   In the trailer above, we see Aunt Sarah letting Martin and Louisa’s feelings for each other slip to Eden, then catch Eden looking displeased when Louisa has the mic at karaoke night. So it feels like trouble is brewing…

4. Martin And Louisa’s Will-They-Won’t-They Continues

   In case you had any doubts that Martin and Louisa could be endgame one day, Charles and Spencer are here to remind you not to lose hope.

   If Charles saying Martin and Louisa’s connection is “a big part” of the disconnect between him and Eden wasn’t enough, here’s Spencer’s tease about the fan-favorite duo: “That’s what we hope to go on the journey of: Will they? Won’t they? Watching two people to see what will happen…”

   But first, more love triangle drama awaits — or should I say love square? Pentagon?! Because I can’t imagine Mark’s feelings have vanished into thin air, and FOX also revealed that “much to Martin’s further annoyance, in addition to his constant presence, Parker ends up having sparks with Louisa.” Consider us sat!

5. More Quirky Medical Cases And Town Events

   A core component of Best Medicine‘s charm lies in the town’s wild medical cases and unique events, and Season 2 promises more of both! “There’s some really interesting, quirky medical cases this year,” Charles teases before the trailer shows him tending to… a mermaid (Ellen Soraya Nikbakht), which we’ll see in Season 2’s premiere, “Be Careful What You Fish For.”

   “So many things go off the rails,” Spinella adds after the trailer mentions a neck-up amputation, three positive pregnancy tests from men, and more. Segarra also promises “more crazy events in Port Wenn,” including a karaoke night at The Salty Breeze, feat. Mark belting another banger, of course! And there’s also a big town lobster crate race to look forward to!

6. Welcome To Port Wenn, Andrea Martin!

   Great news, Andrea Martin fans! We also get eyes on one of Season 2’s most highly anticipated guest stars in the first look teaser above. As TV Line reported, Martin will be playing Judith, Aunt Sarah’s quirky pal who “becomes yet another townsperson to test Martin’s patience. When Judith’s smoking habits begin to not only affect her own health, but the safety of the town, Martin and Sarah need to get involved.”

   Showrunner Liz Tuccillo told TV Line that Martin was such a huge fan of the show that she sent her an email in hopes of landing a role. If Martin looks familiar, you likely know her from nearly 200 film and TV credits, including Great News, Evil, the My Big Fat Greek Wedding movies, The Gilded Age, Only Murders in the Building, Overcompensating, and more.

“What’s beautiful about Season 2, is now we know all the characters,” Spencer reminds fans.

“Best Medicine Season 2: It’s the best,” Charles teases. “Put life aside for a little bit and watch the people in this town, because it’s part of the fun of it.”
