A couple was arrested after allegedly leaving their 4-year-old child who ate a THC gummy alone for eight hours while they went off to attend a Louisiana State University football game, officials said.

Scott Police arrested Mary Cormier, 36, and David Butt, 34, after the parents found the child unresponsive on Saturday after leaving him alone despite knowing the tot consumed a cannabis-infused product, police said.

“Officers were made aware the parents had knowledge of the incident and chose to leave the four-year-old with another juvenile child so they could attend the LSU football game instead of seeking medical attention,” Scott Police said in a statement.

The child was taken to an area hospital and remains inside an intensive care unit, officials added.

Both parents were charged with second degree cruelty to juveniles, child desertion and three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. 

Cormier and Butt were taken into custody at the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office and have been released after posting bond.

Unintentional marijuana ingestion in children younger than five years old can be especially dangerous, with such cases accounting for 41% of all poison control encounters in 2020, according to the National Institute of Health.

Marijuana toxicity in children can cause somnolence, nausea, vomiting, mydriasis, and conjunctival erythema, and serious cases can result in respiratory failure, seizure, and unresponsiveness.
