Jen Belichick, the wife of Steve Belichick, said there was “misinformation and speculation” over the former UNC defensive coordinator’s resignation amid the conclusion of an internal investigation into the football program.

In her statement, released to ESPN’s Field Yates, Jen Belichick said the family was “grateful for our time and our opportunity in Chapel Hill.” 

“We are very proud of our influence on the positive direction of the program,” her statement continued. “Our priority will always be to show up with a healthy and strong mind for ourselves and our 5 children. We are humbled by the relationships that have been fostered here in North Carolina and would like to thank each and every person that has positively impacted our experience.

“Unfortunately there is misinformation and speculation about our own situation, but we believe prioritizing health as the most important thing you can do in this life and is invaluable compared to anything else. We strongly encourage anyone in need of support to utilize their resources in order to achieve the best version of themselves.”

Jen Belichick did not go into what exactly had been the misinformation regarding the situation surrounding her husband. 

Steve Belichick has been on medical leave since early August, and his resignation will take effect on Oct. 27, when his leave ends.

Lawyers hired by the University of North Carolina had been questioning people about whether Steve Belichick allegedly used drugs at work or if he allegedly gave at least one player drugs, WRAL reported. 

In its announcement that it had concluded the independent investigation, UNC announced that Steve Belichick had resigned.

The university did not give many specifics about the findings of the inquiry, but did say that the “investigation determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct.”

“The investigation also found that these actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure,” the school said.

Steve Belichick is the son of UNC head coach and six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Bill Belichick. 

He was a part of Bill Belichick’s staff with the Patriots from 2012 through 2023, and spent one season as defensive coordinator for the University of Washington in 2024 before rejoining his father at UNC last year.
