It’s been a rough go for Cam Ward this week.

The second-year Titans quarterback opened the new season with a 23-10 loss to the Jets on Sunday. His new head coach, Robert Saleh, who was the coach of the Jets from 2021 to 2024, said Ward is currently “at the floor of what it takes to be an NFL quarterback.”

Leading up to their Week 2 matchup with the Eagles, Ward was asked to address Saleh’s comments, and gave himself a more positive review.

“I think I am a very good quarterback,” Ward told reporters. “I think I do a lot of things different, that a lot of quarterbacks can’t do. And there’s also stuff I have to get better at, some things that I lack and that’s a process you take on each and every day. I have great coaches around me to keep pushing me to the level I want to play at, and when the tide turns I am pretty sure it’s going to be a different story.”

Ward was then asked a rather uncomfortable question by a reporter: “Doesn’t a very good quarterback have better results than you have?”

“I think it comes with the game,” Ward pointed out. “It comes with the defense you’re playing. It comes with what the DC’s philosophy is and every game’s not gonna be a shootout. It could be a bad passer rating, a bad completion ratio, but it’s all about the win and loss. We haven’t done that and that’s something we only focus on.”

The Titans went 3-14 last season in Ward’s rookie year, and in the offseason tried to place more weapons around him to further his development, selecting Carnell Tate with the fourth pick in April’s draft and signing Wan’Dale Robinson in free agency.

Ward and the Titans face a tough matchup with Vic Fangio’s Eagles defense this Sunday.
