What do fans and critics alike think of MobLand Season 2? Well, it’s only been one episode, but the second season currently boasts a 100% Tomatometer score. So I’m going to go out on a limb and say… people like it!

In his season premiere recap for Decider, Sean T. Collins praised the man behind Harry Da Souza’s steely gaze, writing that “Hardy gives MobLand a gravel-throated gravitas no other crime show on TV has, because no other crime show on TV has Tom Hardy in it.”

While Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren exude enough charisma to light up Las Vegas during a three-day weekend, we’re here to shed some light on an intriguing new character: Johnny Flynn’s Frankie. We’re briefly introduced to the man who’ll almost certainly become Kat McAllister’s (Janet McTeer) “paladin” — defined as a “trusted military leader” or “leading champion of a cause” — at the conclusion of MobLand’s Season 2 premiere (“I Wanna Be Your Dog”).

Where Have I Seen Johnny Flynn Before?

You might recognize Flynn from his portrayal of David Bowie in 2020’s Stardust, Dylan Witter on Netflix’s Lovesick, or as Mr. Knightley in the Anya Taylor-Joy-led 2020 romantic comedy Emma. The talented performer also starred in the 2023 film One Life, 2014’s Song One, and the 2015 Comedy Central sitcom Brotherhood.

He also plays Lucius Malfoy in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.

Flynn is also an accomplished musician, with his band, Johnny Flynn and The Sussex Wit, releasing a number of popular albums. Their latest, Beam Cottage, drops November 6.

Fun fact: Flynn also wrote and performed the theme song for the British comedy series Detectorists.

What Can We Expect From Frankie In MobLand Season 2?

It’s only been one episode, but it’s safe to say that Frankie and Kat will be formidable adversaries for Harry (Hardy), Conrad (Brosnan), and Maeve (Mirren).

“I don’t know if the Harrigans have faced a threat like Kat or Frankie,” Pierce Brosnan recently told Decider.

During an interview with TV Insider, Flynn spoke about what inspired him when bringing the character of Frankie to life.

“It’s interesting. There were a lot of things from that same era, the sort of late ’60s to mid-’70s that I was thinking of,” Flynn said. “There’s a playwright called Joe Wharton, who I love, and a lot of his characters have that same kind of maybe sexually ambiguous menace and eeriness.”
