Giants’ Paulson Adebo heads to IR as his rough start to 2026 takes another hit
Paulson Adebo’s Giants tumble just took another twist.
And what was already considered a thin cornerback unit is getting even thinner.
The Giants placed Adebo on injured reserve with a knee injury on Friday. They don’t believe it is a long-term issue and expressed confidence that Adebo will return after the minimum four games he must miss without the need of any clean-up procedure.
Adebo, in his second season with the team after signing a lucrative three-year, $54 million deal last year, had a rocky training camp — after a rough first season — and lost his starting gig to the resurgent Deonte Banks.
Adebo played just 10 snaps on defense in the Giants’ Week 1 win over the Cowboys.
But Banks’ status for the team’s Week 2 “Monday Night Football” clash against the Rams in Los Angeles is now uncertain. He did not participate in Friday’s practice, a day after he was a limited participant on Thursday due to a calf injury.
Banks dealt with cramps in the Week 1 win and is now trending in the wrong direction. Harbaugh said he is considered day-to-day.
Either way, Friday’s news means rookie second-round pick Colton Hood (No. 37 overall) is in line for a bigger role, either as a starter in place of Banks next to Greg Newsome II and Dru Phillips or as an important rotation option.
“For sure, yeah,” Hood told The Post when asked if he thinks his opportunity will come this week. “They’ve prepared me well. I’ve been ready, just waiting on my opportunity, going out there and making the most of it.”
Hood played just six snaps on defense in Week 1, with more of a role on special teams, where he played 12 snaps. Now, he might be thrown into the fire in primetime in front of a national audience against a Rams team that has a star-studded receiving corps with Davante Adams and Puka Nacua, though Nacua did not participate in Rams practice on Friday with a hip injury.
“They’re both great players,” Hood said. “We treat ’em like nameless, faceless opponents. I’m looking into ‘em and watching the film and stuff but I’m just trusting my technique when I go out there. … I’m extremely excited. I get to go out there and play on Monday Night Football, something that I’ve always dreamed about and I’m ready for it.”
With Adebo on injured reserve, the Giants subsequently signed Nikko Reed off the Chargers practice squad — where he was playing under coach John Harbaugh’s brother, Jim — to provide extra depth at the position.
“At this time of year it’s good to be aggressive, especially at that position,” Harbaugh said. “There’s still guys on the practice squad who won’t last on the practice squad probably too much longer, so it was a good get for us.”
