Omar Cooper Jr. lands on IR as Jets’ wide receiver group takes hit
Omar Cooper Jr.’s electric first play with the Jets will be his only play for at least a few weeks.
The rookie wideout is being placed on injured reserve after spraining his ankle in Week 1, The Post’s Brian Costello confirmed.
Cooper, a first-round pick out of Indiana, showed his electric speed on his first reception in the NFL, a 30-yard catch-and-run that saw him break multiple tackles and set up the Jets inside the red zone on their first drive of the season.
However, Cooper sprained his ankle on the play and was carted off the field.
Earlier this week, it was reported by NFL Network that he was considered week-to-week and could avoid an IR stint.
To add some wide receiver depth, the Jets signed former Giants wideout Sterling Shepard to the practice squad this week.
Cooper proved to be a huge weapon for Indiana over his final two seasons with 20 touchdowns and 1,531 receiving yards.

In 2024, he led the Big Ten with 21.2 yards per reception.
His Indiana teammate, cornerback D’Angelo Ponds, is expected to make his debut with the Jets against the Packers on Sunday after a calf injury kept him out of Week 1’s win.
