Zoe Saldaña is pulling back the curtain on the “Lioness” episode that stunned viewers.

The season three finale of Taylor Sheridan’s hit CIA/military drama aired this past Sunday to put a bow on its latest run.

There were a lot of questions to be answered. The biggest one was: Who was responsible for Joe’s (Zoe Saldaña) kidnapping?

Who was really pulling the strings? Who had the power and ability to orchestrate such a complex operation?

The answer was Aaliyah Amrohi – the daughter of a major terrorist financier targeted in season one by Joe’s team.

The reveal of Aaliyah was far from the only shocking moment in the finale. It’s increasingly clear that Joe is losing her grip, and her life with her husband and daughters is more or less broken beyond repair.

Upon finally returning home, Joe arrives at an empty house and now she’s truly alone. A life of secrets and violence has finally caught up with her personal life.

It was a heartbreaking, but not surprising moment in the finale.

Saldaña spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the crushing finale, and was asked if Joe is filled more with anger or fear.

“I think both. Part of the reason why Joe struggles so much is that fear keeps seeping in. She has to find ways to just muster the courage, to be fearless, because if she becomes afraid, then that means she’s going to second guess any decision she may make on a whim. These decisions have to be made last minute, or people die, and if you’re afraid, you second guess yourself so you’re not operating on your skillsets and your instincts, and she knows that,” the star actress explained.

The actress who plays Joe further told THR, “She also knows that Kaitlyn (Nicole Kidman) is constantly assessing her. That’s part of their friendship. They do have a very special bond. You don’t have to show it. We’ve seen versions of the type of bond between Kaitlyn and Joe, but through a masculine, male gaze. We’ve never particularly seen women have such a stoic, disciplined relationship that is based on trust and respect and love for country. She knows that Kaitlyn is the end all be all, and she’s constantly assessing her, like she’s assessing anybody in the room. Her goal is to always assure Kaitlyn that she is the most trusted lioness that she has.
