It’s the first week of autumn and there’s a crackling crisp in the air and a brand new episode of The Great British Baking Show on Netflix.

Yes, The Great British Baking Show is back — but not everything in the tent is the same. Sure, Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding continue to charm us with their adorable antics and iconic judge Paul Hollywood is prepping his first Hollywood handshake of the season, but Dame Prue Leith has departed the franchise.

Who replaced Prue on The Great British Baking Show? Why, none other than the “domestic goddess” herself, Nigella Lawson.

Hardcore “Bake Off” fans have known about Prue’s exit and Nigella’s arrival since last January. Prue posted a heartfelt Instagram post explaining why “now feels like the right time to step back” from the super popular cooking competition show.

“(I’m 86 for goodness sake!), there’s so much I’d like to do, not least spend summers enjoying my garden. Whoever joins the team, I’m sure they’ll love it as much as I have. I feel very lucky to have been part of it,” she wrote.

Shortly thereafter, producers closed in on hiring Nigella Lawson as Dame Prue Leith’s replacement. She confirmed the news on her Instagram on January 26, noting that it was “daunting to be following in the footsteps of Prue Leith and Mary Berry before her,” before admitting she was “thrilled to be joining the team.”

Nigella Lawson is a 66-year-old British food writer, television presenter, and former journalist. In 1999, she launched the groundbreaking series Nigella Bites, which followed her life as a home cook in London. (I recently fell into a hole on YouTube watching bootlegs of this show and it’s still so good!) Nigella Bites went on to revolutionize the cooking show genre and it established Lawson as an international lifestyle expert.

Over the years, Lawson has appeared on other shows in both the UK and US, including The Taste. However, joining The Great British Baking Show might be the biggest move for Lawson — and The Great British Baking Show — in years. It’s a perfect alchemy of format and star. Lawson’s warm, unfussy approach to cooking is a great match for the cozy charms of the “Bake Off” tent.

The first episode of The Great British Baking Show Collection 14 is now streaming on Netflix. New episodes will premiere on Fridays through the fall.
