Justin Herbert won’t be the only member of his family playing for the Chargers on Sunday.

News broke on Saturday that Herbert’s younger brother, Patrick, has been elevated from the Chargers’ practice squad and will make his NFL debut against the Bills on Sunday.

This comes after the Chargers have suffered an absurd number of injuries to tight ends. David Njoku was placed on injured reserve due to a fibula injury. Though Charlie Kolar was initially supposed to go on IR after he hurt his left forearm last weekend, the team decided to not place him on IR after all.

But Kolar isn’t active this weekend. Oronde Gadsden II was the Chargers’ only healthy tight end earlier this week before Los Angeles signed Hayden Rucci from the Jaguars’ practice squad on Tuesday. Herbert’s elevation means the Chargers will have three active tight ends against the host Bills.

Patrick Herbert signed with the Chargers’ practice squad earlier this month after spending the preseason with the Jaguars. He spent his rookie season in Jacksonville last year but was never activated for a game.

Both Herbert brothers went to the University of Oregon and played together during the 2019 season. Justin was one of the best quarterbacks in college that season, but Patrick was just a true freshman and barely saw the field.

Justin never completed a pass to Patrick in college. So if the two can connect on a pass Sunday, it would be the first time they did so since high school.

That would make for a nice family moment. But the 0-2 Chargers need to focus more on winning a game than setting up a pass from one brother to the other.
