Netflix’s Unabomber movie, which began streaming on Friday, is introducing a new generation to the true story of the Unabomber, aka Ted Kaczynski, the American terrorist who killed three people, and injured 23 more, with homemade bombs sent through the mail in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.

Directed by Janus Metz Pedersen, with a screenplay written by Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves, the Unabomber movie follows two timelines. The other is set in the ’90s, during the final days of the Kaczynski manhunt and eventual capture by the FBI. Shailene Woodley stars as a fictional FBI Agent named Joanne Miller, likely based on real FBI agent Molly Flynn, who received a tip and linguistic evidence gathered by a private investigation team hired by Kaczynski’s brother, David.

After receiving a guilty conviction and life sentence in 1998, Ted Kaczynski served over 25 years in maximum security prison in Florence, Colorado. In 2021, Kaczynski, now in his late 70s, was diagnosed with rectal cancer and moved to a prison medical facility in North Carolina.

Kaczynski received chemotherapy until March 2023, “when he refused any further treatments due to negative side effects and his poor prognosis,” according to medical examiners, as reported by NBC.

According to an autopsy report obtained by NBC, Kaczynski was “depressed” before his death and sent for a psych evaluation. His cause of death was listed as a hanging, with a shoelace used as rope, in his solitary cell in the prison medical facility in North Carolina.

“At around midnight on June 10, 2023, he was found to have hung himself from a handicap rail in his room with shoelaces,” the report read. “He was initially pulseless, and resuscitation was initiated.”
