Wyndham Clark was not shy about his intentions of proposing to his girlfriend, Emily Tanner, a few months ago.

“I’m going to be in Cabo next week. That’s my happy place. So I’ll be down there having fun. Presidents Cup; I’m playing a tournament in Japan; hopefully get engaged and then going to South Africa for a tournament as well,” Clark said when asked about his upcoming plans for the offseason after winning the BMW Championship in August.

Clark was asked to elaborate on what he meant by “hopefully,” and said, “Hopefully she says yes.”

When asked whether he’s still getting engaged, Clark said, “Yeah. It will happen.”

It sounds like Clark regrets how he handled this moment, given that he spoiled the surprise of his engagement.

When speaking with the media at the Presidents Cup last week, Clark was then asked whether his past comment about proposing to Tanner was a “slip-up.”

“Kind of. You know, what’s funny is, when they asked me, they were like, ‘What are you doing?’ And that’s what was on my mind, because that’s what I was really focused on. And I said that, and I was like, ‘Oh, boy,’” Clark responded, per Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey.

“But she also knew. We went and picked out rings and stuff. So she knows it’s happening. So it’s not that big of a surprise. But now, I’ve really got to try to disguise when I’m gonna do it,” Clark continued.

Clark and Tanner are still clearly going to get engaged. But Clark will have to get creative about maintaining the surprise.
