The hulking animal emerged from the trees alongside its cub, forcing the driver to slam on the brakes.

Within seconds, the bear — believed to be the mother — charged at the vehicle and began pounding on the hood as the woman, in her 30s, scrambled to lock the doors.

Then things got even more frightening.

The bear planted its enormous paws on the car and began shaking the vehicle.

As the woman watched in horror, it repeatedly bit at the metal, leaving her trapped inside and fearing it could smash its way through the glass.

The alarming encounter unfolded on Tuesday evening as she drove home from work on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, reported the U.S. Sun.

Incredibly, she was unscathed and eventually able to drive the damaged car to the nearest police station, where she reported the attack.

She said: “I stopped because I thought I was going to hit them, and then it attacked.

“I locked the doors and prayed it wouldn’t get inside and waited for it to go away.”

The commuter feared the bear would break through the glass as she felt the vehicle shake and heard its growls.

The ferocious attack left the hood badly dented and covered in deep claw marks, with some of the bear’s claws punching holes straight through the metal.
