USC fans reach breaking point with ‘Fire Lincoln’ chants emerging in Coliseum

USC football fans have reached a breaking point with Lincoln Riley.

After USC came back on the field to begin the second half of their Week 5 matchup against Washington, the team opened the third quarter with a disappointing three-and-out; the USC student section began chanting “Fire Lincoln” behind the team’s sideline.

@BarstoolSC posted a short nine-second video on X of the fans calling for Riley’s job, and it quickly garnered a lot of traffic. An hour after it was posted at 6:36 p.m., the video had over 52,400 views, 18 comments, 45 reposts, and 247 likes.

While the fans in the stands were letting Riley know their true feelings, they were doing the same on the internet.

@USC_4 posted a graphic of Riley in a burning dumpster with his shoulders shrugged while having a keen smile.

@zje214 called out the Trojans’ defense by commenting, “The tackling 😭😭😭” likely referring back to a play on the following series when USC’s secondary made two poor tackle attempts on Washington tight end Decker DeGraaf, resulting in him scoring an easy 42-yard touchdown reception down the sideline.

Riley also caught a stray from @GCumsox wrote on the post saying, “At least you cancelled a hundred-year rivalry to make the playoffs,” referring back to the team’s decision not to play longtime rival, Notre Dame this season, for the first time since 1943-1945 because of World War II (the two teams did not play each other in the shortened 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

USC ultimately defeated Washington 25-21.
