Russian drone slams into key Kyiv bridge during German chancellor’s visit as Putin prepares mass military mobilization: report
A Moscow drone slammed into Kyiv’s key Northern Bridge on Sunday, leading to a fiery explosion during a visit from Germany’s top official — as Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly preparing a mass military mobilization.
Dramatic footage from the Ukrainian capital showed a Russian drone crashing into the busy span during morning traffic, with a large fireball erupting from the explosion.
Cars could be seen rushing through the blast area to get to the other side as fire and black smoke overtook one side of the bridge.
Miraculously, only two people were injured in the incident, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said.
The airstrike came during a visit from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whose arrival in Ukraine was met with air raid sirens, explosions and interceptor fire.
The Kremlin has repeatedly warned Europe, and Germany specifically, to halt its aid programs to Ukraine as Kyiv fights back the Russian invasion.
The attack on the Northern Bridge is only the latest major hit on Ukraine in recent days as Russia attempts to demolish the country’s infrastructure uniting its capital of Kyiv, with Moscow firing five attacks on the city’s Southern Bridge on Thursday and Friday.
Russia’s Ministry of Defense warned Sunday that the attacks on Kyiv would only get worse in the coming days.
“Strikes by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation against military and military-industrial facilities, as well as associated infrastructure in Kyiv and other regions of Ukraine, will be intensified,” the ministry said in a statement.
Ukrainian President Zelensky, who has repeatedly slammed attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, said he and Merz had a successful meeting centered around a nearly $1.5 million aid package for his country.
“It includes weapons that will help us now, as well as support for our energy sector ahead of winter – an important energy package,” Zelensky said in a statement. “Of course, we discussed the need for air defense, which is critical at this time.”
Analysts have warned that the coming winter could be a defining moment in the war as Ukraine faces logistical hurdles in the deadly cold while Putin struggles to refill his ranks after suffering record-high casualties in 2026.
The Russian dictator has since imposed strict limits on the freedom of young men to pave the way for another round of mass conscription, the Sunday Times reported.
Putin is forcing men to present their draft papers before they’re able to take out a mortgage, buy and sell property or be recorded as a business owner, according to leaked documents.
The documents, signed Sept. 15, specifically note that the rules are to “ensure their appearance at the military commissariat upon a summons”.
Russia has been avoiding mass mobilization since the backlash from the first year of the war, where men ran out of the country in droves to avoid the draft.
Since then, Russia has stuck to a year-round mobilization effort, but the desperate need for more soldiers has pushed military officials to announce that they are planning to conscript 120,000 soldiers this fall.
Col. Gen. Yevgeny Burdinsky, head of the Russian General Staff’s mobilization department, instructed conscripts to be ready to roll out as early as Oct. 10 while also claiming that they would not be deployed to the frontlines.
