‘Slow Horses’ Season 6, Episode 4 Kills [SPOILER] In Devastating Twist

In Slow Horses Season 6, Episode 4, “Lost and Found,” assassins Jim (Kyle Soller) and Jane (MyAnna Buring) finally found the Slow Horses, who lost a crucial member of their Slough House family.

The body count on the Apple TV series has been steadily climbing since Season 1, and in staying true to Mick Herron’s book series, Slow Horses has never shied away from killing core characters — no matter how painful.

We thought we lost Sid Baker (Olivia Cooke) in Season 1. We actually lost Min Harper (Dustin Demri-Burns) in Season 2. We said goodbye to Marcus Longridge (Kadiff Kirwan) in Season 4. And in the Season 6 premiere, we learned that David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce) passed away. But sadly, River’s (Jack Lowden) granddad isn’t the only core character we’re losing this season…

In a devastating twist, Slow Horses Season 6, Episode 4 also ended with the death of a fan-favorite character. And even if you read the books, this loss HURTS. So who dies in Slow Horses Season 6, Episode 4? Grab the tissues and read on for answers.

Slow Horses Season 6, Episode 4 Ending Explained: Who Dies In Slow Horses Season 6, Episode 4?

As Decider’s exclusive clip shows, Episode 4 picks up right where Episode 3 left off. Sid and River head into Nova Bowl bowling alley in search of a payphone they can use to call Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas), and Jim and Jane follow with weapons loaded, ready to attack. After an agonizing back-and-forth with stubborn cashier Phil (Leon Annor), Slough House’s dynamic duo try to use a payphone, but their efforts are interrupted by shots fired from Jane! Meanwhile, in the car park, Jim takes shots at Coe’s cool car!

Jane shoots River’s hand, but struggles to track him and Sid down in the Nova Bowl obstacle course, full of distractions like neon lights and arcade ambiance. With his hood up, an incognito Coe enters the bowling alley, with Jim not far behind. Though Coe nearly stabs Jim with his push knife, Jane shoots and scares him off. Thanks to some sprinting and an assist from Coe, the three Slow Horses speed off to safety, leaving the assassins behind. But it doesn’t take long for Jim and Jane to track them down at a busy rest stop.

After Sid bandages River’s hand and the two have a disagreement, they part ways to buy food and supplies. Coe is flying solo, intently playing a racing game in the arcade. But when his game ends, he turns his head and clocks Jim and Jane. Next thing we know, Jim’s walking alone into the men’s room, where Coe is sitting by a sink, awaiting his arrival.

“Are you FSB?” Coe asks. “GRU,” Jim replies. After calling out Jim’s “good pension,” Coe says, “I think you’ve got the wrong list,” and stands, push knife in hand. In a glorious callback to a memorable Season 5 scene between Coe and River, Jim asks, “That a push knife?” And Coe shoots him a “yep,” while flashing a smile. Jim replies, “Nice,” and takes out his own larger knife. Just like that, the two men swing. But Coe isn’t the only one being targeted…

In true Slow Horses fashion, River is busy EATING while his pals are being attacked. The episode cuts between Coe and Jim’s bathroom brawl, Sid fighting off Jane in the car park, and River sipping a sports drink while munching on a sandwich. Sadly, one of the five characters fails to make it to Episode 5.

Before the end credits roll, River watches the assassins’ car peel away with Sid inside. And yes, Jane is driving and Jim has a gun on Sid, which means…

Did Coe Die In Slow Horses? And If So, How Did Coe Die In Slow Horses?

After Jim and Coe pull their blades, they tear the bathroom apart, pushing each other into hand dryers, mirrors, walls, and even taking a urinal down. Coe shows what he’s made of, refusing to cower in fear and getting some serious shots in, but Jim stabs him in the stomach.

When River finally thinks to look in the men’s room to see if his pal’s inside, he finds a bloody Coe slumped down against the wall, hood up, headphones in, rap music blasting. J.K. Coe stayed true to himself until the very end, but DAMN IT, I’m going to miss that lovable little weirdo so freaking much.

Why Did Tom Brooke Leave Slow Horses? Does Coe Die In The Slow Horses Books? Tom Book Explains His Departure

For those wondering why J.K. Coe and Brooke left the series, the character died in book six, Joe Country. Whether you were expecting the departure or not, however, it’s heartbreaking all the same — not simply because Coe became a crucial member of the Slow Horses, but because Brooke’s socially awkward, tortured, introspective performance was so phenomenal.

Though he opened up more after Marcus’ death, Coe was a largely dialogue-free character, an acting challenge that’s no easy feat to conquer. Even in the background, Brooke’s quiet creative choices made Coe a real presence. His thoughtful subtleties and physicality were utterly entrancing. He rocked a hoodie and wired earbuds like the best of them. And even when Coe was deadly serious, Brooke could summon Slow Horses‘ quintessential dark humor. (I still think about the Season 5 paint pot scene and Coe eating cherries in the car regularly.)

Was Coe a psychopath? Maybe! But he was our psychopath, and for those who don’t know, he had one hell of a backstory. (And yes, Brooke told DECIDER he’s up for a prequel series that explores the events of The List, and Nobody Walks.)

“I think he is so odd when we get to him. And he’s like that because what he’s gone through is so extreme and awful,” Brooke told DECIDER over Zoom ahead of Coe’s big episode. “So yeah, I would love people to know. It would be an absolute blast. It would be so cool, because you get to show pre-torture Coe.”

Though we’ll miss Coe dearly, Brooke’s powerful performance helped make Slow Horses the success that it is. Fingers crossed that we haven’t seen the last of Coe’s Slow Horses story yet. Until then, it’s been an absolute pleasure watching his three-season character evolution, and Brooke’s passionate ownership of and care for the complex, layered role.

Stay tuned for Decider’s full post-mortem interview with Tom Brooke.

New episodes of Slow Horses Season 6 premiere Wednesdays on Apple TV.
